History is filled with examples of the struggles of nations to preserve their national integrity. It remains for the empire of Austria-Hungary to pre sen the spectacle of a conglomeration of many people held together by no cohesive force of national sympathies or culture, but by the bracing energy of its neighbors. While Poland was torn in fragments, the Austrian states are continued as a whole by the anx ious efforts of the powers. In spite of the constant attitude of menace, there is nothing more dreaded by the countries of Europe than any widespread convulsion of a terrtorial nature. If the Czeechs. Germans. Hannacks, Bohemians, Slovaks, and the dozen other nondescript national ities composing the empire of the Han sburgs were to be permitted to yield to the excentripetal violence of their personal feelings, the whole of Europe would need remapping, and the wars resulting would cost at least $20,000, 000,000. The Slavs desire annexation with Russia; the Germans are frantic in their support of the Pan-Teutonic movement; numbers of other little . states desire independence, and the en tire confederacy is at daggers' points. The death of Franz Josef will be a cruicial time for continental harmony, and the imprudent aggressiveness of any one great power must bring on the-. deluge. Germany and Rusia are the powers most apt to err after this fash ion, but the Russian is very busy with the eastern frontier of his dominion and is little likely to stick his finger in this hornets' nest unless compelled to withstand the demands of Germa ny. Strangely enough, England and the United States hold the balance of power, ar.d any standing aloof on the ground of non-interest would be a tremendous blunder. Both nations are involved to a great extent in any Euro pean conflicts, for it would mean the extinction of one of our best mar kets. It is to be hoped that, when the Aus trian succession is a pressing question in the world's courts, the Great Anglo Saxon nations may use their mailed hands to prevent an internecine scram ble for the fragments of what was onw known as the holy Roman empire. XOW WAXTS DIVORCE. Chinaman Already Tired of His American Bride. Norfolk Landmark. Because his American bride has de serted him and treated him with utter indifference, Lin Kong, proprietor of a Chinese restaurant in East Main street now wants a divorce. Lin and Minnie Weistner, who lived in Avon street, were married several days ago. but the woman's change was too much for her. as she appeared next day attired in a fashionable tailor-made suit and this turned her head, so Lin says. One day after her marriage the Weistner woman, pardon, Mrs. Lin Kong, was back in her old haunts again, and lastevening she was found here by her husband of a few days. Lin wnt over to police headquarter? and told his story to Captain Dalton. and his wife later followed him over, hut positively refused to live with her Celestial better half again. Tiring of arguing with the woman. Lin engaged Mr. Charles M. C. Doran as counsel, and will this morning in stitue divorce proceedings in the Court of Law and Chancery, as he says that he never again cares to see the woman who has caused him so much trouble. The average man would rather have his wife act like the devil and look like an angel than to act like an angel and look like the devil. It always seems like a miracle to a man the way a woman will manage a big hat, a long skirt, a bundle, and her religion in a high wind. A LIFE AND DEATH FIGHT. Mr. W. A. Dr. Griffith, Dentist. o ver Harry Belk's Store. and XJen-tistr-y- PEOPLE Bad Circulation is the cause of most of the ills that come with old age. With advancing years there is a decline of strength and vigor the machinery of the body moves with less speed and accuracy. Because of the weak and irregular action of the heart the blood moves more slowly, becomes impure and loses much of its life-sustaining properties, and muscles, tissues and nerves literally starve for lack of nourishment. A sluggish and polluted circulation is followed by a long train of bodily ailments. Cold feet, chilly sensations up and down the spine, poor appetite and digestion, soreness of the muscles, rheumatic pains, hard and fissured skin, face sores, chronic running ulcers on the lower limbs and other parts of the body these and many other diseases peculiar to old people are due to a lack of healthy blood and imperfect circulation. Restoration to health must come through the building up and purification of the blood, thus adding strength and tone to the vital organs and quick, healthy action to the circulation. S. S. S. being strictly a vegetable blood remedy and the best tonic, makes it the most valuable and efficacious of all medicine for old people. It is free from all mineral ingredients, and mild and pleasant in its action. It cures blood diseases of every character, even those inherited or contracted in early life. As the system gets under the influence of S. S. S. there is a marked improvement in the general health, and as richer and purer blood begins to circulate through the body the appetite improves, and there is a softness and elasticity about the skin that you have not noticed for years ; sores begin to heal, pains in muscles and joints grad ually cease, and you find that it is possible to be happy and healthy even in old age. Our medical department is in charge of physicians who make a study of blood and skin diseases. If you would like to have their opinion and advice in your case, write them all about it and you shall receive such information and advice as you want. This will cost you nothing. Others have found our medical depart ment of great benefit to them their cure being much more rapid as the result of some special directions received from our physicians.
