Only after suffering for three weeks with what he believed to be merely a stiff neck, has George Strube, of No. 254 Palisade avenue, Union Hill, been in formed by surgeons at the Orthopaedic Hospital, No. 126 East Fifty-ninth street, Manhattan, that his neck is bro ken. They added that, according to tne best known medical authorities, he should have died the moment he received the injury. Instead, the young man is able to walk leisurely about tbe street3 and on Tuesday evening he took a trol ley ride. Those wTio have charge of hi case are not without nope tnat cr-irplete recovery will be effected. Mr. Strube is nineteen years old and jo more man six ieei im.ii. ac wcit.a about 140 pounds. His growth was so rapid that, as often happens in simi lar circumstances, medical men say. his tninal column was affected. It became peculiarly subject to luxations or s'id irgs of the vertebrae. Two years aero he went to the Orthopaedic Hospital, where Dr. H. J. Bogardus, of No. 427 Bergen avenue, Jersey City, is in charge of the clinic. Dr. Bogardus treated him until eight weeks ago for curvature of the spine. A month after the young man had ben permitted to remove the brace, whi h he had worn for two years, he slipped on the ice. In trying to save himself from falling he threw back his head and immediately felt a slight pain in his throat. Supposing it to be an ordinary strain of the muscles of the neck, he thought little of it, although he was un able to work. A week ago he decided to consult Dr. Bogardus, and then dis covery was made of his peculiar eocd: tion. A hyphoa, or knckle of bone, plainly could be felt protruding irom his neck. Dr. E. W- Caldwell made .in X-ray photograph showing a fractr.re of the odontoid process. The highest medical authorities agree that a fracture of the odontoid process causes in'tant death. The young man's head, neck and shoCi- ders were put in a brace that permits a movement of the upper spinal bone.-'. He can swallow no solid. The case is so unusual that Dr. Bogardus called it to the attention of the membar? Ql Physicians and Surgeons Club of Jersey City. Cleveland Plain Dealer. Veritable Cave Dwellers Live in the Des ert In Southern Part of Tunis. In the southern part of Tunis and ex tending away to the Sahara desert still live a race of men who carv their dwei' lings from rocks, veritable cave dwellers, the Spokane, Wash.) Spokesman-Review. Their land is an elevated plateau, rolling, barren, scorched by burning sues and swept by the hot winds of the north of Africa. And yet the capital cityif swh It can be called of these people i"'rus three thousand soul. Traversing the streets of this des ert metropolis, the visiting tourist will do well to keep a wary eye, lest sudden ly he find himself precipitated from the level of the plateau which, of coursf, to the inner court of some cave dwel ler's home, for, not unlike the mole a of our meadows, these strange, people have burrowed deep into thfc rock wher ever they have found a place that seem ed suitable for their subterranean dwel lings. This i the mode of house construc tion among the cave dwellers of Tunis. A site is first selected which seems to permit of easy excavation and at the same time offers stratifications of harder rock of sufficient durability to insure the cave man that his house will not tumble down about his ears. A trench or pit is then excavated to the desired depth, perhaps thirty or for ty feet, one end of which ia left sloping at an angle to permit easy exit. Into the perpendicular walls of this pit the cave man digs, hollowing out chambers of such size as his fancy and tbe needs of his household dictate. The rooms at the lowest level he will use for the general purposes of domestic life, for stables for his camels and for granaries; tunneling upward, he will hollow out chambers at a second grade to be used as sleeping rooms. Perhaps a shaft for light and air may connect with the level of the ground above and afford an upper exit. The smooth surface of the outer wall of the excavation permits of adornment varying with the aesthetic taste and ar tistic skill of the builder. The furni ture of each room is designed espec ially for it and is executed on the spot from the living stone. flffl TO A. do1ooini few for the first time you get A Complete set of all Mark Twain's writ ings at just exactly one-half the price they have ever been sold before.
