PATRIOTISM FOR THE STAY-AT-HOM
There has been much sard about the patriot
ism of those who are going to the front to fight
the battles of the trenches, and orators have ora
ted: and writers have written volumes concern
ing that attribute known as patriotism, or love
oicountry. But we" are prone Jto forget that
fighting is only one of the. means by which pa
triotism is expressed. We are. apt to unduly
stress this phase of the matter, and to think that
the , sum total of patriotism, is expressed in terms
of the. men who actually go the front.
The patriotism of those who stay at home, of
those .who will never scent the smell of powder
nor, feel the recoil of a gun against the shoulder
has been sadly neglected. There will be nine men
back .of the line for every one who is doing
the, actual fighting, and yet few have connected
these men with the thought of patriotic devotion
to home and country. They owe to their country j-
uio morcriants who ad-

Patronize
try.is no less, and their sacrifice should be no less
than the fighting lads who sail away across the
sea to face the enemy in mortal combat.
. There are many ways in which this patriot
ism can be demonstrated. It can be demonstrated
by a genuine willingness to pay cheerfully their
share of the financial burdens; by liberal free of
ferings to worthy causes whose object is to make
life easier for the soldiers; or by helping to care
and comfort for those whose supporters and pro
viders have gone to the front.
It ian also be shown by self denial. Surely
qn who has escaped the awful ordeal of battle
ought to be eager to deny himself some of the lux
uries in order that the one who is taking his place
JnNaMCnts Land might find life a little easier,, or
death a little less hard. A man's life is dearer
than all the money, and those who do not offer
themselves of the altar of their country surely
ought to be liberal to the one who offers his body
for the salvation of the nation.
v And finally, when the war is over, and the
remnants of the band come marching home, , the
stay-at-homes can do no less than help them
start in again where they left off, in the business
world. It would be a monument of unfairness
for heroes coming from the batle-field to . find
their Jiving cut off and their places taken by those
who stayed at home. Surely their old customers
should-give them back their patronage; surely
they should not be made to lose financially while
the less brave profit thereby.
Let patriotism be common to all Americans.
Let every lhan, woman and child exnress this at
tribute in the various ways at his disposal. . Let
it be a national quality, not confined to soldiers
and sailors.
