What the Ladies of the Woman's Club are Doing The peoiile of the South will not qiffer tliis winter from hunger, as the rrv for food conservation that has gone ,in all out the land did not fall upon ik-af ears. The women of our South laud have responded nobly the call, and are (U'ini their part today just as their mothers and grandmothers did in the sixties. They are learning rapidly the lesson of food conservation and are i-annins everything in their sighfc. So zeal"" have the women become that ntit man was heard to remark that he ua afraid to tz home, for fear that bis wife would can him. Fautry shelves are groaning beneath their weight of well filled cans and jars that are a pleasure to the eye. These too lv the hundreds and not by tty' liozons a of yore. There is a lively spirit of good na turel rivalry among the housewives. ou every hand such remarks as thi are heard "How much canning have you done'.-" "1 have canned a hundred miarts." This is music to the ears of those who are interested in the eon M'rvation "f food and the prices" of foodstuffs this winter, for it is in thi wav that nriees will be kept down nd thf necessities of life remain with in reach of the man of limited means The Home EcoHomic Department of the Woman's Club of Greenville ha: heen doing a fine work by contribu tins all surplus vegetables from their home ginletis and canning them. In this way I'i? cans have been filled with vt'getaldos that would otherwise have Ifen waited. Those canned vegetables will be for sale at reasonable prices and the re turns will z' into the treasury of the Huh. Classified William London Back to High Point William Loudon, who has been con nected with the Daily News for the past two months as advertising man ager, has resigned his position, which takes effect tonight. Mr. London will go to his home in High Point, from where he will take a trip North for his vacation. After returning, he will again engage in newspaper publicity work. "Fat Boy,' as London is effection- iitely called hy his friends, has prov ed a valuable member of the- Daily News staff, and it is regret that he sees fit to leave the paper at this time. That he will succeed in the work he will reenter is already conceded, for he is a live-wire and hustler in every sense of the word. ? .LOCAL MARKETS. N f School-Mistress Gets War-Cross (By United Press) PARIS. (By Mail) Quesmy, a lit tle village north of the Oise, counts BxiiSSLJi. J?17 as the proudest day in its A in i general, with a guard of war-veterans in attendance, came to pin the War Cross on the breast of Madame Pelle quer, the" local , schoolmistress and mayor, for her gallant conduct. Mme. Pellequier is one of the mod est heroines whom France has reason to be proud of. When the war broke out Mme. Pellequer was teaching school in Quesmy, while her husband was sim ilarly employed at the neighboring vil lage of Maucourt. Her husband lert for the front, and she took over hhs pupils. The Germans occupied Quesmy, and found Mme. Pellequer installed as mayor, maintaining order and attend ing to everything. She it was who first refused to salute the invaders, who, for once, overlooked this insubordi nation. - On one occasion, the commanding officer visited the school and remarked that the provinces of Alsace-Lorraine were indicated on the map which hung in the class-room as forming part of France. He pointed out this fact to Mme. Pellequer why they were sepa rated from the German Empire. "Because they belong to us," she answered simply. Then, at last, the French returned in March, and the report they made of the nible work accomplished by Mme. Pellequer, has earned her the distinction reserved for the heroes of France.
