IS OUR I i MANHATTAN C A NEW YORK If army camps In the east and south are going in strong for athletics there isn't a word strong enough to express what Camp Lewis, at American Lake, Wash., is doing. Aside from having one of the best boxng instructors obtainable, a basket ball coach of more than ordinary stand ing in the athletic world, Capt T. O. Cook, who directs sports at this camp, claims Camp Lewis has the finest ath letic field in the nothwest and that is for track and kindred sports alone. The camp boasts twelve football fields, fitted with goalposts and seating ac commodations. Six athletic fields have been laid off, in addition sixteen base ball diamonds have been constructed There is a Y. M. C. A. auditorium which contains four basketbell courts and which has a seating capacity of 3,000. There are sixteen assembly halls fitted with rings for boxing, sta ges for vaudeville, and various other entertainment features. The athletic field has a quartermile and a 220 yard straightaway track with ten lanes. Several other fields are to be construe, ted in the 6pring. Twelve regimental football teams went through the season, six games be ing played evry Wednesday and Sun day. A regimental fund supplies the money necessary to equip the teams. Baseball is being be played in this north-western camp, o rit was until a few weeks ago. Every unit has its baseball team. A number of minor and major league players are included in the cantonment, wth hundreds of for mer high school and college players. Willie Ritchie, former world's light weight champion, Ls the boxing instruc tor, and he is following out the plan found tobe bo successful in other camps the lining up of a small squad of potential instructors, and giving them the fine points of the art to im part to their men. Lloyd E. Ireland, olaimeut of the featherweight wrestl ing championship of the yorld, is teach the men jiu-jitsu stunts in addi tion to catchas-cau hold.
