Tuberculosis Test Is Offered Free In the fight against the ravages of the "Great White Plapiio" . in Nnrfh Carolina the extension department of the Bureau of Tuberculosis of the State Board of Health is doing notable work in making the diagnosis of the di sease easier, as welt as in treating sev eral hundred of the citizens of the, State each year. r From this department there is be ing sent free on. request a "tube, of tu berculin for the Von Pirquet diagnostic test, together with simple direction which will enable any person to mate the test for themselves. The directions are to scarify three places on the tipper forearm, using sterile knife or needle and removing the outer layer of skin without bring ing blood, in the same manner as pre paring for smallpox vaccination. A small amount of the tuberculin is then placed on the upper and lower scar ifications, the middle one being left as a control, and care is urged that no 11 tuberculin be allowed to touch this con trol sacrifl cation. Within twelve to forty eight hours an inflammation will develop around the two scarifications on which Tuber culin was placed In the case of a pos itive reaction, sometimes very mild, sometimes s ored that it. almost glows. It begins to fade within a few hours, and is gone in from twelve to forty eight hours. I No permanent scar is left nor ill effects felt. A positive reaction indicates that the patient has been infected with the germs of tuberculosis, but does not ne cessarily mean that the infection is active. In the absence of reaction, termed a negative reaction, all three scars should dry up quickly and disap pear without any sign of inflammation around the scarified areas. The Bureau of Tuberculosis urges the use of the test in all suspected cases as an aid to diagnosis, and es pecially urges that all members of a family in which there is a case of tuberculosis take the test. Following a-positive reaction a careful examina tion is urged. . It will give power to run yenx pomp, feed grinder, and some of the other light machinery on the j place.
