Number of chil dren in average attendance 3,188. There are no government schools, all the schools, being denomination and assist ed. They may be classed as follows : Anglican, 4 ; Methodist, 2; Indian Mission, 2 ; Roman Catholics, 35. The almost universal pervalence of the French Patrois, known as Creole, has! neen a great bar-to the progress of edu cation, for though it is forbidden to be used in the school it has been found al most impossible to strictly enforce "the rule. For the last two the adminis trator has generously given prisses. amounting to $96.00, as reward to the Creole speaking children attending pri many schools in St. Lucia who have made the most progress in the speak ing of English. Though there is an ordi nance making jt compulsory for par ents to send their children to school, it has not been found practicable to put it in force. Nevertheless, the percentage of children attending school has risen 11.7 per cent, of the population. Secondary education is provided for boys at St. Mary's College, Castries, which receives a grant aid of $1000; and for girls at the Convent, Castries which rceives $100 a year.
