MEMBERSHIP NO SURPRISE
TO THE PEOPLE OF STATE. .
It is no surprise to learn that
N. Carolina is way up toward
the top m membership in the
Junior Ordef of United Ameri
can Mechanics for this strictly
American organization is calcu
lated to appeal to such an Amer
ican Statebut we confess that
we had no idea that one-sixth of
this strong orafimization's en
tire membershin is r-sident in
North Carolina. And this, very
prooaDiy, does not include the
insurgent lodge headed Ty Bruc
Craen which sometime ago kick
ed over the tra -es as the re3iilt
ol a discussion of the order's re-
letjon to its orphanage.
The Junior Order in North
Carolina not needing to so great
ly emphasize its Americanism,
is most teonspicuons in its efforts
in Denaii ot tne public schools.
The Juniors are not all "well edu
cated and comparatively few of
them are especially wealthy;
dui uiey mean to see to it that
tneir children and the children
of their neighbors are educated
ana nave a chance to succeell.
. How mUch of tho I
interest in schools is due to the
Junior OrGer it would be hard
to say; but everywhere in the
State whetfever there is a school
JonaVsue or a special tax to
be carried, its 'Membership turns
out en masse and works. And
the best thing about the work of
a Junior is that he Seldom wears
his coat on the jot) andlie doesn't
mind spitting on his hands.
In the hew eduticatiohal pro
gram that North s Carolina must
put across one-sixth of the mem
bership of the national order will
be found an asset of incalcula-
oie vara.
