Republicans are smilling somewhat J over disclosures of fretxeouta in Wall | Street stock deals, and say that would j preclude even such a financial giant ; like Owen D. Young. And Raskob s ; deals are sal dto be injurious to A1 Smith—Although A1 has had no con nection with them. Even so. merely whisper "A1 Smith" to a coterie of G. O. P. confabers. and ! they have chills. Maybe we ll get some Republican j ‘ dope at the Democratic convention! Suppose the other fellow's convention 1 always looks better. The "drop Curtis” for vice president ! agitation is said to have been joined ' In heartily by supporters of Mrs. • Alice Roosevelt Longworth in the [ Longworth-Gann social controversy. Mrs Longworth. however, is missing | the convention. Fireworks Set Off. It was a mention of the President’s name by Congressman Bnell, of New York, in his inaugural as permanent chairman of the convention, which set off the fireworks. The only actual business of the short morning session was ratification of the work of several committees. It all went off with dispatch. Even a HENDERSON, (N. The Republican resolutions commit tee today approved, after sharp de -1 bate, a plank severely condemning . * party irregularity in Congress. Sidney Strotz, general manager of the Chicago Stadium, told the Repub licans today to dig up $8,500 they owe him or “you won’t have a hall to morrow morning." Strotz said the amount is the bal ance due for construction work. Convention officials seemed uncon cerned. and there apparently was lit tle fear that the $8,500 would not be forthcoming on time.
