The common eause of blind ness In children is infection of th# eyeball, during the process of birth. The person of the mother may harbor -germa which get Into the baby’s eyes and set up the Inflammation which 'results In scar ring and opacity of the cornea. And tbs prevention Is so simple! About 80 years age a German ob stetrician, Carl Crede, feeling, as did all doctors all over the world, the tragedy Involved in having babies blinded during birth, began to search for away to remedy the situation. He reasoned that R was logical to suppose that If ths germs In the eye could be killed off immediately the crtpptbiK nol occur He made a series or painstaking In vestigations on different • solutions Hononnc American Colleagues v * % BSHB^HF' HP jiO ■ H -’ Kp Ji r | V MSs HBmf v • pr • .. . «£&s*'. jbT '' <*M' " v «5W B jiSfr * li < 1 i «_ji~ dnj ffl Jfc ' r | lll'' B ■HBi i bh b - wif to i* t* Hi “ ••• VI ,11 I ’ 1 • ’» - •>■*'' --“ m BT ' . /jB/Bt, Xtiw ■ ml Visiting the United State* to lecture on the feminist movement in India, Mrs. Maya>i "-i Gangulee, Hindu women’s leader, Is shown as she placed a wreath be, «? the monument to the American suffrage pioneers in the Capitol at Washington. The steamer ‘‘Glamorgan Coast** is shown as which might be dropped In the eye with safety anl still destroy the germs. He was tlnally rewarded by the discovery that a one per cent solution of sliver nitrate dropped m the baby’s eyes Immediately after birth would accomplish the desired results In Doctor Crede’s hospital 800 babies were born a year. Before he began the use of silver nitrate 10 per cent had Infected eyes and In most Instances the disease resisted the most Intelligent efforts at treat* menL Blindness resulted. After the use or silver nitrate was begun less than one child In 200 developed In fection In the eye*. When these results were an nounced physicians all over the world began enthusiastically to us« the method. But time makes people careless. Physicians often feel now that this precaution is no longer necessary. They think perhaps that the mothers under their care are too clean to In fect their babies’ eyes. Or perhape a parent or relative objects because although the silver nitrate solution in one per cent strength never does any harm it causes a little redness of the baby's eyes for a while. But the danger of blindness tn the new born is re3l and still present, and this preventive measure is still re quired. In most countries it is required by law. What Is hard to understand is that lately when state legislatures are considering the re-enactment of such laws, such action should meet with s storm of opposition from fanatics who oppose ail medical leg islation \famsE % \ pfcyj : cr»H'T J | doJOj taenH ( ’ T ' l 'U f J tT. *snT HOW / aha was being battered to pieces off Cape Cornwall, near Land’s End, England, where it ran ashore during a dens* fog.
