Inability of Municipalities
to Agree Explains Their
Failure .
- >,
llaily Rnreai.
In the Sir Walter Hotel.
IIV J. C. UASKRRVILL.
Raleigh, May 22.—The cities and
towns of the State failed in their ef
forts to get any of the highway fund,
derived from the State tax on gaso
line, for the maiintenance of streets
inside of city limits, despite the nu
erous bills introduced in the General
Assembly along these lines, it was
pointed out today by Chairman E. B.
Jeffress of the State Highway Com
mission. The reason for this failure
according to Jeffi'ess. was the in
ability of the representatives of the
cities and towns to agree on any
one particular plan.
“The Genera] Assembly would have
passed th? bill requiring the State
Highway Commission to maintain the
streets over which State highways are
routed through cities and towns, but
for the fact that many of the cities
and towns wanted core than this bill
gave them,” Jeffress said. “As a re
sult, they ended up by getting noth
ing.”
The bill requiring the highway com
mission to maintain the streets over
which State highways are routed thro
ugh cities and towns, for the same
with of pavement as that of the high
ways, passed the house and for a time
seemed sure of passing the senate.
But the various cities and towns, thro
ugh the. North Carolina Municipal
Association, wanted much more than
this bill would hace given. In fact,
this organization of municipal offi
cials, wanted the highway commis
sion to allot 10 per cent of all the
revenue collected from the gasoline
tax to thi cilies'and towns to be used
by them in maintaining
and a bill was introduced a ]n ® IPM »
Lnes . Still another bill would
required the highway com?. haVe
maintain all the streets in i l S ‘° n to
5,000 population hr less. " >>vns of
But the General Assembly saw n
these measures would have div! hat
least $1,000,000 a year from u ed at
