Press €>-2.'i-33| Industry Control Be be Felt Here (Continued from Page One.) June 27, at which all: manufacturers who object to the regulations may present their objections, Major Flet cher said. The prevailing work week in most North Carolina textile mills for male labor has been from 66 to 70 hours a week, Major FleLcher said, although the 1 _ . Y/or.. week for women is 55 h,-.... U.i-or this .mw act, all these -i~... - be reduced to 40 a week, tk. Wi.k to consist of five days each, 8 hours a day, w.th a minimum wage of net less than $lO a week for the lowest paid labor. It is expected thait a wage ~ !<■ pioviding more pay for •the more skilled classifications will ibe worked out under the law and made mandatory upon mill operators. Another provision in this law likely to prove a thorn in the side of a good many mill operators, is that contain in Section 7 of the act, which stip ulates that all employes in all in dustries in all states, shall have the right to organize and bargain collec tively—tha/t is, form or join labor unions—without interference from the mill management. It also provides that hone Os the employers may force any employes to join company unions This section, then, prohibits employ ers from interfering in any way with the right of employes to' organize or join unions and to bargain collective ly. This entire act, especially the sec tion with regard to hours, wages and the right of employes to organize and ijoin unions, is erpected to meet with much disapproval from such operators as the Coles and Entwistles in Rock ingham, and other operators who have always maintained they had the right to fix the hours of labor and rate of pay to suit themselves. But there is nothing they can do about it now, un der this new act. Nor can they pre vent the employes from organizing independent unions or joining ones al ready organized. The law is on the side of the employes and there is nothing the operators can do about • I * « ~IM!
