M. C. Miles, named by the Kiwanis
club as Chairman of the committee
to arrange for a celebration of the
completion of the Garnett street pav
ing and white way project, today an
nounced the central committee to have
charge of the preparaitons for the
event, intended to be one of the big-*
gest civic affairs Henderson has had
in many years.
In addition to himself, the commit
tee consists of R. G. S. Davis, S. f
Stevenson, J. (Harry. »D. C
Loughlin and Henry A. Dennis, with
(Mayor Irvine B. Watkins an ex-officio
member
This group is to be called togethe
for its first meeting in the next ?e~
days, Mr. Miles said, and the fi»*B'
broad plans for the celebration will be
laid down at that time. Several sub
committees of men not on the cen
tral committee will be named to look
after other details of the arrangement*
and as soon as this preliminary work
has been started the plans are to be
gin taking on definite shape.

will be invited to attend the celebra
tion and these two h officials will
probably be asked to speak briefly.
There has been considerable discus
sion of various proposals for the cele
bration, but none is with authority
pending sanction by the committee.
The paving is expected to be com
pleted within a few days, and work
will start soon thereafter in installing
the standards for the white way light
ing system. A tentative date for th*
celebration will probably be name*’
by the central committee as one o'
its first acts.

Pneumonia After Injury

C. G. Feoples, 64, lawyer of Jackson,
Northornptcn c.ounty, died in Maria
Parham hospital here Tuesday even
ing at 6:40 o'clock of pneumonia, a
complication which developed after he
sustained severe injuries in an auto
mobile wreck a mile south of Hender
son last Thursday morning when en
route to Raleigh to attend the Demo
cratic State Convention
Four other men, including Garland
and Buxton Mldyette, iu of the late
Judge Garland E. Mldyette, also of
Jackson, who were in the car and
were injured, were discharged from
the hospital several day 3 ago. Mr

several fractured ribs In the wreck.
Mr. Peoples is survived by his wife
and a son. it was learned today. Plans
for the funeral were not definitely
learned here, but the services were
expected to be held at Jackson, prob
ably today or tomorrow. The body
was taken to Jackson last night.
Mr. Peoples was prominent in poli
tical affairs in Northampton county,
and wa3 a. well known attorney of his
section of the State.

Garnett Paving
Only four mores hort blocks remain
ed this afternoon to be poured with
concrete before the actual paving job
on Garnett street is completed, and it
now appears certain that the concrete
part of the project will be completed
this week if there arc no interruptions.
After the pavement ha s hardened
sufficiently to permit trucks to enter
the street/ the work of installing the
white way is to be starteef* That work
will require probably a month or more.

Talks by R. H. Bailey, local man
ager of the Carolina Telephone and
Telegraph Company, ana F. Hr. Baker,
who has charge of the rewiring of the
city for the telephone company, fea
tured the regular weekly meeting of j
the Rotary club heid last evening.
Thet elephone men displayed a map
or blue print of their communications
in the city, showing where the wires
were being placed underground and
how they would tie in with their other
lines. The men explained in detail
their work and their talks were most
enjoyable to the membership.

I next month, and dates for the entrain
ment were announced today.
Company C will, as usual, go to
Camp Glenn, Morehead City, and will
leave here Saturday, July 7. They will
be joined here by the companies from
Oxford and Warrenton and will travel
on a special train to Raleigh, where
other units will also be taken on. The
trip to Morehead will be over the Nor
folk Southern from Raleigh byway
of Wilson, Greenville, Washington and
New Bern. The company is expected
to carry virtually its entire personnel
of three officers Captain T. S. Kittrell,
First Lieutenant C. B. Sturges and
Second Lieutenant G. M*. O'Neil and
64 enlsited men to camp. It is re
cruited up to full peace-time strength
at the present time. The men will be
away for 15 days. Approximately 20
units with a little over 1,000 soldiers
will be in camp at Camp Glenn for
the annual summer encampment.
The service company and the band
and the headquarters staff of the 105th
Medical Regiment will leave here Sun
day, July 22, for Camp Jackson, near
[ Columbia, S. C., for their annual 15-
day encampment. Captain James N.
O’Neil is commander of the service
company, and the band is in com
mand of Lieutenant Ben Urquhart.
In the two outfits are two officers and
77 men. In addition, Colonel Hodge
A. Newell, of Henderson, is in com
mand of the regiment, and there are
eight officers on his staff, all but
three of them Henderson men. The
medical units from this city will num
ber almost 100 men.

cent National Guard indoor rifle team
contest, nationwide in its scope, and
in which five North Carolina com
panies, including his organization here
participated.
Teams representing 312 military un
its, scattered over the nation, partici
pated, the shooting in all instances
being in the armories of the compan
ies.
Company C ranked 78th in the na
tional contest, with a score of 2,643
