This powu- came upon them on the day of Pentecost. tions. Missionary Note of Prophets In making Israel his “chosen peo. pie” God had not rejected the gentile nations. Rather, he had them in mind in preparing Israel as his witness to “all the ends of the earth ” This was the missionary note of the prophets: "I will give thee for a light to the gentiles, that thou mayest be my sal vation unto the end of the earth.” To further this missionary objective he located his missionary; nation in Palestine which was the cross-roads of the ancient world, the traffic cen ter for caravans of peace and war Even wicked Nineveh had its place in the grace of God. God had a harder time to persuade Jonah of this fact than he had in persuading Nineveli of it. But he succeeded with both the wicked city and the unwilling mis sionary. Christ's World Program Christ’s program was in no sense narrow or exclusive but world em bracing: “Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and 10, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Here is his man date to his church for world evan gelization. Here is his program for the church’s guidance and its power through the promise of his abiding presence through the ages. Again he expressed it. thus: “Ye shall receive power, when the Holy Ghost is conife upon you: and ye shall be my wit nesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Paul the Missionary The greatest missionary the gospel has produced was Paul of Tarsus. His call to carry the gospel into dis tant foreign fields) came to the church at Antioch thus: "The Holy Ghost said, Separate Me Barnhas and E2ND2RSON, '(N. CJ DAILY DISPATCH, FRIDAY, JUNK 21, 1981 Che tfoDett Cod *urk 16: IS — “Go ym into all the world, and preach the gospel to •he whole creation.” Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” Thus Paul departed un. der the guidance of God’s spirit upon the first of three great missionary journeys embracing the greater part of the whole known world of that day. On the second of these journeys he carried the gospel into Europe in response to “the Macedonian call,” "Come over' into Macedonia and help UNCEASINGLY the song of crickets flows In drowsy rhythm over verdant fields rmsmm Qt waving The fragrant wild rose V ' 1 WwM With sweet perfume beneath the moonlight yields | FM Intoxicating magic by the bank M Os lush grass under that huge maple tree, \ T/^Ji Where once so tired and spent a poet sank " / -I \ Upon his back and watched the heaven’s blue sea. \\/ jJ| Watched carefully the great white clouds move V I Like fields of marsh cotton stirred by thg breeze Sflic V \ h And ripples. Dnily lliirena t In tlie Sir Walter Hotel. Raleigh, June 21. Doctors who confess their limited knowledge of infantile paralysis observe that de spite the restrictions on crowds the 'disease spreads wher'e there aye no crowds. Figures are not availble in specific cases, but it is observed that rural places suffer more by: the spread than do the towns There have been orders closing schools, limiting at tendance on many public functions and the disease seems to seek out the sparser communities. There ap parently is more paralysis in the country than in the towns. The efforts seem to be effective in other ways. The disease is nothing like, emalignant as it at first prom ised to be. The health people are more adept at finding i out and treat ment in time seems to be efficasious. The doctors still advise against big public congregations and the young people are right much upset over a possible abandonment of the big balls during the remainder of the month. The number of complete cures has been remarkably large and if the campaign against the disease has not headed off the spread it has helped to bring hope to stricken families. But the men of science are still un able to fathom the queer conduct of a malady which seems most danger ous in crowds and at the same time seems to find a natural trend toward the more sparsely settled districts.
