ASSOCIATED PRESS AND CENTRAL PRESS Caddell Is Questioned About Harnett Slaying Self-Styled “G-Man” Under Abduction Charges Here Grilled by Officers On Sunday REPORTED REMOVED TO GRANVILLE JAIL Story Is He Attemped to Break From County Jail Sunday Evening; Officers Quote Him is Saying He “Knows Plenty About” Slaying of Woman. A preliminary hearing in recorders court today for J. H. Caddell. self styled government agent, on a charge of abduction of Mrs. Robert Watkins, wife of a Vance county farmer, was postponed, and there were reports, not confirmed by officers, that Cad dcll had been removed to the Gran ville county jail in Oxford after a irputed attempt to break from the Vance county jail last night. Caddell was questioned at great length ovei the week-end by Sheriff .) K. llamlct.t. of Vance county, and Shot iff VV I'. Salmon, of Harnett countv, in connection with the .-lay ing of Mi . W. W. Mason, wife of a j|ai nett county storekeeper, in an alleged robbery and hold-up at th" stoic near Pine View, the night be fore Thanksgiving. Mason was brought lure yesterday to look at Caddell wdh a view to identifying him a.- a :i * miter of the slaying party. 1 and a report said that he identified ( add' ll - one of the group. Officers 1 would not confirm this, however. Sheriff Harnlett. before leaving here ; lat'" Sunday afternoon for an unre \ialed d' 1 filiation, said Caddell had j admitted that he “knew plenty" about \ Mis. Caddell was removed from the city jail here to the jail at Henderson by Sheiiff J. E. Hamlet, of Vance county yesterday morning. Sheriff Hamlet arrived here late Friday afternoon, and joined Sergt. D. B. High and De tective R. L. Myers in apprehending Caddell. The woman was not detained. She stated she was out of funds, how ever. and requested Sheriff Hamlet to take her back to Henderson to her home and four children, one of whom was ill with pneumonia when she left home. The officer complied with her request. Mrs. Watkins gave no motive for leaving home other than she was “not herself.” Local offices who have talk ed Caddell and checked up on his past record, are inclined to the opinion that Caddell. or Capes, is not quite • himself" cither. What has puzzled the officers here and elsewhere i.~. why Caddell should pose as a federal agem and have two innocent men, “Doc" Cowan and J. E. Dunnagan lock'd up in the Hender son jail as suspects in the fatal shoot ing of Mrs. W W. Ma son in Harnett county only to .skip out immediately afterward with still another man’s wife. It was learned by officers here that Caddell at one time diti some under cover work for federal authorities, al though he was not commissioned to 1 do the work nor did he receive any rcnumcration for his self-imposed ac tivities, it was stated. I*ast year Caddell was in Farmville. | Va., and hinted that his neck had 1 been broken in an automobile acci- I dent. An ambulance was called from ! Danville and the “injured” man taken ! to a hospital in the latter city. Phy- • sicians probed and prodded, examin ed him thoroughly but were unable to find any dislocated verelebrae. It de- i veloped that Caddell was able to i throw his neck out of joint, or at I least to give the appearance of a i broken neck. The hospital officials I caught on to the trick and Caddell I was tried for perpetrating a fraud on the hospital. He was convicted and . sent to the city farm, from which he | escaped and was never caught. He worked something of the same trick at Henderson and bad better, success. During his period of “con valescence" he made his home with Robert Watkins, the man whose .vise was found with him here. Caddell. formerly a resident of Greensboro, was arrested here a few years ago under the name of Capes for aiding and abetting in prostitu tion at a small hotel. On April 30, 1932, ho was held for investigation in Washington. At Raleigh, during 1933. ! he was convicted of immortality and I given six months. It was June 12. J 1931, that he was tried on the Dan ville charge under the name of James Jefferson Capes. Two months later he was tried in Richmond, Va., on a charge of larceny and given three nonths. Morris Resigns On lABC Board ► No Reason Given in Letter to Chairman » Watkins; He Is Still Serving, However. Her.rv T. Morris has sent his re signation as a member of the Vance County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to Chairman Samuel M. Wat- I kins o' the Vance Board of County j Commissioners, it was learned today. ! He has been requested by Mr Wat j kins to continue in office until the ! Ji.”.uarv meeting of the countv com niis boners. when his successor will I piobably be chosen. Mr. Morris is one of the three mem bers of the ABC board named by the commissioners to manage the ABC store authorized by the voters of the county last June, and which was j opened for business on Monday, July 15. The other two members of the j board are T. H. Crudup, chairman, ; and Geoige A. Rose. Sr. Mr. Morris has had strong hopes all along that the county-owned and op- j ! crated liquor store was a step toward j better control of the liquor situation. ! At different times since the liquor | store was opened, various arrests ! have been made of defendants charg ; cd with the illegal handling of li -1 quor, and in nearly every instance ! jury trials were called for in the re- I cordcr s or police courts and acquit j tals resulting. While it is understood that this condition was not pleasing to Mr. Morris, the extent to which j that may or may not have been a ! factor in his resignation from the ' board was not learned. When asked today about rumors ’ about town that he had resigned, Mr. 1 I Morris only replied that “you can hear anything.” Mr. Crudup would not slate that Mr. Morris had resign-j ed, but said he met with the ABC hoard at a session this morning. BRICKWORK ABOUT ENDED FOR SCHOOL Windowpanes Being Placed On Front and Side; Struc ture Is Pushed Nearly all of the brick work on the new Henderson high school has been finished, and in a part of the build ing window frames have been placed, together with the sash, and window panes are now being put in at places on the front and side. The huge limestone slab over the second story at the main entrance has already been put into place, bearing the inscription, “Henderson High School.” The. brick walls to the rear, where will he located the auditorium and the gyn nasium, have almost been completed. The contractors are endeavoring to have as much as possible of the building finished and closed in before the severe weather of the winter sets in. If that stage of the construction program can be reached, the inside work can be carried on despite the cold and the snow and rain. There h s been general hope and expectation that the building will be finished in time for the holding of the high school commencement exercises next spring. It is believed that this can be done.
