rather than his J. When North
played low, dummy’s Q was played
and won. The Ace of spades then
picked up North’s last trump at
the fifth trick.
To regain his own hand the low
est spade was led from dummy and
won with the 7. The Jof diamonds
was covered with North’s K. Dum
my’s Ace won the seventh trick.
Dummy’s 10 of spades was led and
overtaken with declarer's J.
Had declarer led a diamond at
this juncture. North might have
played so as to leave the lead of
the last diamond from dummy,
leaving declarer obliged to lead
clubs from dummy and causing
him to go down a trick. Fortu
nately West saw the possible pit
fall and avoided it. At the ninth
trick declarer led his 10 of clubs.
North’s J covered. Dummy’s Q
won. The Ace of clubs won the
next trick and took West’s last
club. Declarer led dummy’s third
club and ruffed, using his last
spade to win that eleventh trick.
All declarer held were the 9-7 of
diamonds. North held the 10-5 and
dummy the Q-8. Thus far declarer
had found every missing honor in
North’s hand. He was far from
certain that player also held the
10 of diamonds. If South held the
10, the contract would be defeated.
Declarer led the 9 of diamonds and
North did not cover. What possi
ble good could a cover do his side
when dummy held the 8? The 9
won, then declarer led his last dia
mond, cempleting his contract
very fine play.
