He was now afraid to lay down his last trump, so led clubs. East ruffed the third round and led his last trump, which South won, cashed his two remaining clubs and then finessed the spade Q, which lost to East’s spade K. The dia mond Ace was now cashed, setting the contract. When the third diamond lead was made, South had a very simple way of making his contract by re fusing to trump. If on this lead he discarded his losing spade, a fourth round of diamonds could have been trumped in the dummy, or any other return could have been won. Played in this way, South could not have failed to make four hearts. * • * Tomorrow’s Problem ♦ AQ765 SKS2 ♦A Q 2 4* A 2 4jlo 8 2 nvn ♦ 4 3 VIOB4Q J 9 7 3 $854 > 497 4107 4 3 *S. 4QJ 8 6 SK9 * fA 6 4 4 K J 10 6 3 *K9S (Dealer: South. How should South play for 7-No Trumps against a lead of the heart 10? y ly done with the fourth and fifth doses, so that as a matter of fact, eight doses are given by many physicians and reactions are very largely avoided. It appears to be effective in about 90 per cent of cases, and the immunization is partially com pleted very rapidly, approximately at the third dose. Curative Treatment Effective The same thing can be said of the serum for curative treatment. This antitoxin has also been very greatly improved by work at many laboratories. It is much smaller in bulk than the old amount of antitoxin used, and much more effective. It should be given as early in the disease as possible. Its principal value consists in its ability to reduce complications. Complications of scarlet fever, such as infection of the ear, throat, eyes, and possibly skin abscesses, are among its most distressing features. One health officer says, “There are few complications in patients receiving serum. A favorable ef fect on complications is evidenced by lessened severity and duration as well as incidence." A favorable opinion of this serum has been expressed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the membership of which consists cf very conservative children’s spe cialists, so that we may feel that this opinion is well based. I think that parents at the present time might be glad to know of these developments in or der to co-operate with their physi cians in combating the present epidemic of scarlet fever.
