ASSOCIATED PRESS AND CENTRAL PRESS , Triple Sales For Market Would Aid Tobacco Here Feeling Here Is Increased F acilities for Durham Are Hurting Henderson, and Oxford as Well; Efforts for Three Sets of Buyers Unsuccessful Triple sales for the Henderson to bacco market appear to many persons to be very much desired and some thing that would be of great advan tage to the market, according to com ments heard lately. While it is true that volume on local floors has not to date been large enough to justify such increased facilities, next week is expected to see offerings by the farmers increase to such proportions as to congest the warehouses. With only two sets of buyers operat ing. growers who come to market make a rush for the house having first, or at least second, sales, and those forced to go to houses with last sales, with probably a wait until next day, tire of the long delay. Ail of this could be overcome with extra feuying facilities for the market. Moreover, last-sale houses that do Durability TANNER ROOFING CO. Wyehe and Winder Sts. An effort was made during the sum mer to obtain a third set of buyers, but tobacco companies replied they did not think the business was here to justify it. The thought now is that triple sales during October and No vember would be a tremendous help to the warehouses and the growers, since these two months are the most congested period.. Moreover, border markets are beginning to close and more buyers would be available as a result, it is observed. Those who are very anxious for a third set of .buyers point to what is happening in Durham. Sales there have greatly increased this year with triple sales in force at all times. More over, the fact that such extra facili ties are offered there is believed to be causing damage to Henderson — and also Oxford —in drawing much to bacco away from these floors to the Durham warehouses. While Henderson and Oxford are competitors for the farmer’s leaf, the menace of three sets of buyers in Dur ham affects both of them, and ob servers know that neither Hender son nor Oxford can get triple sales unless both get that service. For that reason, the suggestion has been made that a concerted drive by the two markets would be more effective. It is recalled that Durham fought for several years for the third set of buyers before all of the companies consented to give in. But, in the ex pression of the street, the market there is certainly “going to town” since the new facilities were made Henderson Daily Dispatch available. Some are pointing out in this con nection, too, that after Durham lias operated one or two seasons with triple sales, it will have dug so .deeply into Henderson and Oxford patron age that both markets will have been reduced to some extent as the result, with a diminishing chance of ever getting triple sales. For that reason, the urgency of action at the present time, and concerted action by the two markets, has been suggested. As a matter somewhat of self-preserva tion, the two, it has been said, might quite profitably forget their competi tive spirit long enough -to pull to gether for their mutual advantage. Some optimists are bold enough to believe that some headway could be made toward extra facilities, a tleast for October and November, if the proper amount of pressure were brought to bear in the right manner. TIIIC ENDS AFTER FIVE DAYS Several Active Cases of Tub erculosis Found; Treat ment Advised After five days of intensive examin ations of patients, the tuberculosis clinic which began last Monday at the Scott Parker Sanatorium came to a close today. Dr. D. S. Denholm, of the staff of the State Sanatorium, who has been in charge and doing the examination work, prepared to make up his report tomorrow and leave. Definite statistics on the number of patients examined were not avail able today, but it was thought could be had by Saturday. The first two days of the week were devoted to white and the next two to colored patients, and those not able to find appointments on those two days were taken today. It was believed some 150 or more persons took the examina tions. Treatment was advised for several persons examined, one or two of whom are to fre admitted to the Far ker Sanatorium, and others will be treated otherwise. DISCUSS BUDGET OF COMMUNITY CHEST Sam Alford, chairman of the new Henderson Community Chest, said to day a meeting would be held in the next few days to reach a definite de cision about putting on the coming campaign. Some items may be eliminated or trimmed. At the coming meeting, a definite date will he fixed for the drive. most in demand on warehouse floors for the day, and that many prices well up in the 40-cent class were not ed. One estimate was that the day’s average would be close to the season high of $28.06 made Wednesday, and possibly even better than that. Sales Thursday amounted to 246,094 pounds, bringing $67,924.12 at an aver age of $27.60 per hundred pounds. The high average Wednesday was on 168,130 pounds, selling for $47,178.06. Heavy sales are expected from this time on. Offerings this week have been rather light because growers were busy stripping their leaf and sav ing other crops on their farms.
