Astrology
There was a celebrated astrolo
Sist in Washington — '•Madame
Marcia." She was in close touch j
with Mrs. William McKinley and i
professed to have foreseen the Me- I
Kinley assassination. Superstitious !
folk believe it. I knew her. She
lived up on U street. She said she
didn't much believe in .spiritual
ism—the "spirits," she admitted,
had a tendency to fool yon. Cut the
stars, she alleged, are infallible.
Professor Marcus Lamar, anoth
er professional, verged on oeing a
genuine psychologist. Ile'd put on
a spiritualistic performance if a •
customer insisted on it, but ho
much preferred to study an appli
cant's mentality and personality and
then give his patrons the advice that
he honestly believed best adapted
to the latter's especial requirement.
I once saw and heard him conduct
ing one of these investigations. Upon
its conclusion his visitor said, "Yes,
but what'll I do?"
This fretted the professor. "How
the heck," he exclaimed angrily,
"do 1 know what you'll do? All 1
can tell you is what yuu OUGHT
to do.' There isn't much taking
aDout that kind o: business.

RUTHERFORD FARMER
GETS GOOD AVERAGE
YIELD FROM COTTON
Rutherfordton, Feb. 26. — Good
farming practices produced an aver
aye of 838 pounds of lint cotton to
the acre for Rayburn Edwards, prom
inent Rutherford county farmer of
the Gilkey township, reports F. E. i
Patton, l'arm agent of the State Co'l
leye Extension Service.
Edwards' five acres of cotton fol
lowed a good growth of lespedeza.
He used the Rucker No. 1 variety
which was planted in three-foot rows
and the plants chopped to 12 inches
apart.
Again Patton says this farmer be
lieves in carrying out rotation and
seldom plants one row crop after
