He gav the State m I r u • and j dges until January 1 to .-Inw bette: results. A week or two there after war began and the military authorities, probably, had even lrwre entical problems to taco But n the me ntime, according to nn c r reports, the venereal disease ..re has not dropped among the soldiers serv ing in this state. In -ome places :t has increased. According to the unofficial reports r aching State health a.itlv rdies. tiie military authorities are not -o much inclined to blame the civil police for the situation. Rather they contend that with so many thous nds ol soldiers in the state, the job is . just too big for the oltic.rs to handle. The invokat.nn of the May Act very likely would solve a problem which giving considerable concern I i tlie State Highway and Public Works Commission, which cares for prisoners in North Carolina. Women and panders arrested under this net would be federal rather than S: .to prisoners. If some arrangement were made whereby the state kept these prisoners in custody for the federal government, it at least would be paid for the service, as are many county jails which house federal prisoners awaiting trial. Last summer when the a1 ti-vice campaign began, the health, military and prison authorities all got to gether. It was agreed that the State would take over th. arrested pros titutes, making temporary accomo dations for them at the womens prison. In the meantime the State was to build a special concentration i comp which, being a defens.’ pro- | ject, was to be financed by the fed eral government. Plans for a S25f>. 000 camp to take care of around 200 prostitutes were drawn bv State architects. In the meantime the State began accepting the women arrest ed It has taken over 300 such prison ers since then at a cost to the prison ot v.v.i '. <■ r S50.i’ii0. One question the military authori ties would ha\u to decide in event the Use Act i - mx-oked is how broad an area to include. Unless consid erable territory were included, or unless -..Idlers on leave were kept much closer to camp Ilian they are now. the effect would be limited. An Informal survey bv a federal of ficial recently taken showed that th>re had been a c msiderable in crease in prostitution over a large p rt of eastern \ rth Carolina.
