Indefinite Deferment To
Men Over 29 Announced
Washington, May 22.—(ΛΡ)- Se
lective Service announced today a
ixilicy m indefinite deferment for
η:cn over 29 in "useful" work. At the
same time, it predicted a heavier call
of ,v( linger men.
Major General Lewis B. Hershey,
draft director, said at a news con
ference that as a result <>| the war's
end in Kurope, "occupational riefer
lncnt policy must be liberalized" for
registrants 30 through 37.
This course, effective immediately,
means that these older men will not
be drafted so long as they slay in
work considered useful by local
boards. It means, too, that deter
ments will not require renewal at
the end of six months periods, as
heretofore.
Hershey also announced that the
draft call, beginning in July, will
be cut about 2â percent below the
current rate. That will put it at
ΠΙΙ,00(1 nn" . as compared with 120,
000 at present.
The draft director instructed local
boards to review at once the files
of 4-F's and limited s< rvice regis
trants 18 through 25. Where there
is rae.Min to believe "tiny may now
be qualified for military service,"
they should be forwarded for re
examination. Hershey said.
For men 2(i to 29. the prevailing
certification policy of government
agencies will be continued for the
present. Hershey predicted, how
ever, "that the time is comi:-g"
when more of these men occupa
tionally deferred will have to be
drafted.
