1 I: ( ! TIlCnSlAY,3lAUClI 17. 1887. 1 1 THE DEAD THEY ARE US STILL." Irr jLsrrK mc'cakThv. WITH 1 cannot touch his cheek, ...... Nor ruflle with a loving breath his Lair; 1 look into his eyes, ami hear hint sueak lie never knows that lam there ! ' Oh, if mv darling one could only know .That day and uight, through all his weary life, I, whom he loved in years of long ago, Am with him ktill bi wife ! 1 watch hitn at his task. When tie broad sunbeams first light up ; hhroom: , 1 watch him till the evening lays her raasK Upon the face of Day; and in the gloom lie lays his pencil down and silent sits, And leans lib chin upon his hand and fcgs; How well 1 know what memory round lain flies ! I read it in his eyes. And when his pencil's skill Has Bometimes wrought a toucli of happy art. I see his face with sudden gladness fill; I see him turn with eager lips apart, To bid rue come and welcome his success; And then he droops, and throws his brush aside; Oh, if my darling then could only guess That she is near who died ! Sometimes I fancy, too, That he does dimly know it that he feels Some intluenceof love pass thrilling thro Death's priftou buis, the spirit's bonds and seals; Some dear companionship around him still ; (Some whispered blessing, faintly breath ed caress, The presence of a love no death can kill Brightening his loneliness. , Ah, but it cannot be ! The dead arc with the living I am here; But he, my living love, he cannot see His dead wife, though she cling to him so near. 1 seek his eyes; I press against his cheek; I hear liini breathe my name in wailing calls me, calls his wife, 1 cannot speak He thinks he is alone. To see him, still be near him, feel his breath Fan my sad cheek, mid yet lam not free To bid him feel, by any faintest touch, That she who never left his side in life She who so loved him, whom he loved so much Is with him still his v. ife. "The fall of man" doesn't attract near so much attention as the fall of woman pur lieu Jary if fclie is young and pretty and her buslle explodes as she sits down upon the icy sidewalk. Fall River Adcan.ce. It is said that the ratio of marriage is de clining but if so, statistics are sometimes contradictory. So I do hate her, and that is why 1 did it. Look at the freckles on her chin where I kissed the powder off. A little girl lately wrote to her friend. "Yesterdpy a litte baby sister arrived and .papa i9 on a journey. It was but a piece of luck that mama was at home to take care of it." Farmers Gill. If roan will be a blare to custom, he should see to it that it is a good one. A true gentleman is considerate of the rights and feelings of others. o- MAKING SASSAFRAS OIL. An Industry that Might be turned to Profitable Account in this Section. The following article, by Mr. Thos. C. Harris, of Raleigh, is taken from the Popular Science News. We pub lish it as a matter of interest to our readers, many of whom in some local ities the Gold Leak doubts not could turn the industry under considertion to profitable account : In some of the interior counties of North Carolina may be seen, in oper ation, many primitive establishments for the manufacture of the oil of sassa fras and oil of pennyroyal. The ap paratus used in this work is so exceed ingly rude and primitive as to appear ridiculous to most observers; but the product is of good quality, and con stitutes a profitable industry. For these oils the usual style of still" is shown in . the sketch, which may be briefly described as a short trench in the ground, ending in a low flue or chimney. Over this trench is placed a closed wooden box, hav- o: the steam-Dox, allowing steam to pass freely up through the barrel.. A lute of clay is used to close the joint between the lower end of the barrel and the steam-box, as well as the cover of the barrel. Instead of a " worm," a tin pipe immersed in a trough of cold water is used ; and a steam con nection with the barrel is generally made by an elbow brunch of wood, bored out with an auger. The sassa fras tree (Sassafras officinale) grows abundantly in this section, especially on worn-out lands, where it is usually found in dense thickets of small shrubs. The root is dug and washed quite free of dirt, and, after being chopped short .and bruised with a hatchet, is ready for the " still." This work is done by boys- employed by 'the manufacturer, who pays a stated price per hundred pounds for the root ready for use. Tfce same outfit is used in the pro- 'duction of the oil of pennyroyal (He deoma fulegioides) which grows abun dantly in the woods in many counties. . When the barrel is filled with the -roots, and the cover made Jight with 'cla-, the process of distillation goes on HEXDEKSON, X. C. An ordinary bar rel stands end wise on top of the steam -box, and has several holts bored through its bottom, and also through the ton rapidly. The steam passes through the mass of bruised roots, and is con densed by the tin tube into a mixture of distilled water and oil, and runs into a glass vessel set to receive it. Being of different densities, the oil and wate'r rapidly settle into two strata, and one can be decanted from the other. It is said that the operator of such a "still" can pay all running expenses and make a clear profit of $3 per day. When we consider that the cost of es tablishing such a "factory" is less than j $10 for the entire establishment, and1 no chemical education is necessary on the part of the operator, the profit of the work is not to be despised. Note At this time the article was written the price of oil was much higher than at present. Now it sells for about 35 cents per pound, and the business is not profitable unless the root is very abubdant and cheap labor to dig it. It is usually shipped in tin cans to the wholesale druggists North who buy it from the distillers. One hundred pounds of root make two per cent of oil. .The spring and summer months is the proper time to work. No license is required.
