JJ:il;t Ifys, in y; licavon ccrinth nearer C'lllll, And cith more fully breathes the balm of Ji a vcn ; The stillness of jour ah infuM1.- ralm. Fairest and sweetest of the weekly .seven ! Your dews are fresher; jrifceut-r spread your fid-N ; Your streams flow by you with a sweeter son ;r ; Your fl.iwcL-t give out fragrance doubly SOI l, And the unwearied Iiours the joy pro? ion. Ye are like openings in the cloudy sky. Through which we see tlie hidden blue i i . Where all is banfciu:ss and deatli aroun(', Bright davs, abide with us; we need you still! Ye ant tlie open casements, where we hear lit uisiani noius or neayen s ucsceiiuipg chimes. In the midst of a fervent exhortation to sinners a Portland revivali-1, who is ly business an auctioneer, exclaimed: 'Twenty-nine I've got ; thirty shall I have 'em? Bless the Lord! Twenty nine are saved ! Who will come next? Shall I have thirty." The Earth The truest index of a big manhood is the disposition to be fair, honest, just and generous. When you find such a man you will see one who wears the precious coronal of that exalted virtue and regal excellence which kingly natures alone can wear. Wil son Mirror. The North Carolina Tile and Brick Company was formed at Pomona, fiuilford county, about a year ago for the purpose of manufacturing tilings, piping and fire proof brick and teracotta flues from a Kaoline clay deposit about four miles West of Greensboro. The success of this plant has been somewhat phenominal, and to-day they are un ;ible to fill their orders. It is said that Senator Vance is to go to Ohio to take part in the cam paign there. If our Zeb gets hold of Forakcr he will be considerably less than one-acre by the time Vance is through with him. We acknowledge this to be a poor pun, and somewhat of a chestnut, but still it expresses our idea and we therefore venture to use it. We have no respect For ra-cur. Golds Loro Argus. We have nothing to sav against charitable works, but the mother who devotes the better part of her time to hunting up objects for charity and leaves her children to the care of an ignorant, and sometimes vicious nurse, doesn't know what genuine objects of rharity are. The claim which her babies have upon her charity is greater than that of any other charitable claim, and it ought to be satisfied first. Their comfort, training and happiness should lie her first consideration. Goldsboro JleaMi'zht. EN ROUTE TO TfUCSTE. Curious Sireiwry lu Austria Scml-Trol fill Vcgotat li of tlm Adriatic. Bu Toter is scan-ely moro tlian tvcntj' firo mik'3 as tho now (lies froM the shore of tho Adriatic at Trieste. But as far as rcsem blanco or suggestion is concerned it might bo at tho antijHxka. Imagination can scarcely conciive that a semi-tropical sea shore 03 dreamy as that of tho lotus caters lies so near to barren, wind swept hills, towering into jiealcs that aro the abomination of desolation. Lut though tho region is curious, with its cooped out valleys and Its summits as bald f3 tho high Sierra, tho district that you tra verss lu going to Trieste is far moro singular. Tho circular valley gives first its distinguish iu2 caaractcritic to the scenery. I am not in the secrets cf tho geologists, hut these valleys seem to bo a repetition on a larger or smuller scalo of tho depressions in tho limestone districts of the western states, palled "bink holes." A great part cf tho ro- f;lon la mado up of them. Sometimes thoy lave a diameter of 100 foet, sometimes of a mill?. In ouo or two eoss tho formation broadens out iuto a circular valley several miles in diameter, containing several villages. They aro generally, however, of moderate dimensions, and their depth usually ha3 a Certain correspondence with the diameter. TIij fides aro barren nearly to tho bottom, which is usually surrounded by a circular rall, within which may bo a jKilch of grass lu summer, a vineyard or a little crop of porno cereal. Tho area inclosed nay be a few fquare yards or several acres, but tho aggre gate of fertility compared with tho aggro Kate of Ijarnm and stony hillside indicates a fioutest with nature which would appall even tho etout heart of a farmer in northern New Hampshire. Sometimes tho form of tho de lifsiou is slightly varied, and there is level Kround which has received equally niggardly treatment from nature, elsewhere and not far distant so prodigal of her gifts. The road descends at first almost imper ceptibly. Towns with Italian names become 2orp frequent The aspect of nature gradu ally brightens. There aro vineyards of good size, orchards that begin to show the semi tropical vegetation of the Adriatic There aro hillsides on which tho work of affcresta tionls evident. Tbero are others In which tho iittlo farms ore laid out in long, narrow, jiarallelograms, l:ko the stripes on our na tional banner. But as one looks eir across tho barren tracts, strewn with small bowld ers, piled up with rocky masses, or pierced ivith points edges, triangles and fantastic forms of btone, interspersed hero and there tyith oases of gayn pasture ur casual cultiva tion, the idea of unkind, sullon, unrelenting nature endeavoring to drive nun from oft its face ever pivsses painfully upon Lis spirit AVhat a paiadlAj this must have been for the pica of the stone ae, wjth the material for tooli. weapons and domestic, utensils sq plen tiful and cheap. But men who were not sava-fc-es cam hero oad toiled and delved in the Very dawn of antiquity, and later, when Porno cbscrhod Italy, when its galleys plowed tho Adriatic and its cities and villages dotted iU brown shores, its effervescent life bubbled VP and frothed over thii rira of hilLion to this plateau that I havo endeavored to de scribe.
