Hlp " turther the good cause Here is a little good advice for boys which we take from the Murphy Bulletin. It says : Boys, when you see an old person stand ing, get up and offer him your chair. This mark of politeness will commend you more than anv thing else. Respect gray hairs and your path through life will not be filled w i Hi regrets. Leap year is fast drawing to a close and the condition of our bachelor friend of the Sauford Expreas, Brother St. Clair, remains unchanged. He is becoming dispondent over the situation and in this fashion gent ly reminds the fair sex of the fact that he is "stilll on the carpet." Hear him : Have the young maids, and the old ones too, forgotten which year this is ? It just makes us laugh all over ourselves to think what a city Henderson will be a few years hence if it keeps going at the present rate. Let's all put our shoulders to the wheel and not relax until it is a busy, bustling, prosperous city of 10,000 inhabitants, with manufacturing establish ments of all 'kinds to turn out at home many of the rticl.es we now have to go abrocd for. With cold weather and long Winter even inns at hand, it is a good time to think how to make the fireside attractive during the coming months. In every home where any pretensions to refinement and culture are made choice reading matter is not ever looked, and the family that could not se lect something desirable from the varied and extensive stock of Edwin Stephens w ouhl indeed be hard to please. The Gold Leaf has a bargain in real es tate for some body. A tract cf land of 70 acres, only a short distance from the cor porate limits of tlie town can be bought very reasonable. Aside from its close prox imity to town and the natural value of the land, there are other considerations which make this very desirable property. If you want a bargain and mean business, call on the editor who will give particulars. j Branson's Almanac for 1880, is upon pur i Mr. Branson himself, and guaranteed to be ! Stepping into the store of Finch Brothers, next door to the Bank afewdaysago.it was a matter of genuine surprise to the writer to find that they carry such a large and well assorted stock. You can name no ait'ule in the line of general merchan dise scarcfly but what they have it and everything is fresh and seasonable. The shelves and counters are filled up with eveiy imaginable article, and the stock is constantly being replenished. The firm buy directly fioin the laigest manufactur ers of ceitan lines of goods while in other cashes they make extensive pui chases at lending auction houses in the large cities, which of coarse means that they get them at a great discount. This they propose to uive their custoivers the benefit of. Buy ing so much cheaper than their coutjietitors they can undersell them and then make a good profit on their goods. The firm buy for cash, in large quanti ties and get the benefit of all discount--. ! and this of itself would naturally give them great advantage, w Idle they have a still greater one in the peculiar manner in w hich they make their purchases. For in stance, they have jut bought the entire stock of buttons of Parker & Closs at about one-fouith less than these gtods can W ob tained at w holesale in New York. As a matter of course Finch Bros, can afford to sell buttons cheaper than any other dealer for some time to come. And this is the way they buy many of thuir gtxnls in the large Northern cities. When a film wants to close out, or a financial crash n;e, they step in with the jeady cash, figure close on the bargain and lump the whole thing in, thus getting many tilings r.t less than one-half their actual market value.
