THE HENDE RSOKGOLD LEAF THURSDAY, JANUARY 4,1900. The Gold Leaf. henderson, n. c. THUHSDAY, .JAN. 4, lOOO. THANKSGIVING EVE. (Published ly Ilequcst.) On the crowded train, the pasM-nir weie filled with mirth and glee. All were off on a Holiday their i rn and kin to see; There were old people with lots of bund let, off to see th-ir hrv or eirl. Who had moved out of the country into the city's busy whirl. '1'he maidens with their sweet-hearts, all in Joyful glee, Off to some town or city and all th sights tO HP. iS In fact they all were happy and no one seemed to care. If at any of the Thaiilc-icivinK Dinners, there was a vacant chair. There was a heartsick traveller whose thoughts were far away. Who wished that he was speeding to Ids home to spend the dav; With his darling wife and children, what happiness it would be. To have his dear wife caress him, with his children on his kn:e. ile reached his hot -1 at midnight arid the clerk in a semi dose, Said I have a little letter, you want it, 1 supj)Ose; So he took the precious letter, and to his lips he pressed. Asked ttie clerk what room he had. that he might take a re-t. He reached his room in silence, then the seal he broke. With tearf ul eyes lie rea l it. and ne'er a word he spoke; For his heart was heavy laden with thoughts so far awav. Hut the baby hand that wrote, re illy had not much say. A BUSINESS VIEW OP THE CKiAR ETTIi. The most clTectivo blow that has yet been directed against the cigar ette evil, ft blow more effective than all the State legislation that lias heretofore been enacted, i the order which the ollicials of the South Caro lina division of the Southern Railway has passed, as related in the press dispatches this morning. According to this order, all employes of the railroad company who .smokes cigar ettes must juit, or lose their jobs, and no person who smoke cigarettes will be taken into the employ of the company. At present, this order ap plies to only one division of the system, but it may be extended to others. This action of the Southern Kail way Company is the most deadly blow yet jjivuii the cigarette. It will have more effective results than could be hoped for by any State legislation for the reason that it makes war upon the cigarette from a business standpoint. Men who could not be prevented from drink ing by any sort of legislation with which they might be confronted, have willingly and consistently chosen a life of sobriety when the question was presented to them as a matter of business. Only sober men can give a railroad good service; no railroad can afford to employ any other kind. Those employes who at one time thought differently have either reformed or are out of a job. The justness of this requirement of the railroad people for sober men to handle their trains lias never been questioned certainly not by the travelling public but there may be some who will want to know what cigarette-smoking has to do with the question of cliicicncy. To these it will be stillieent to say that railroad officials hold a drinker and a cigarette-smoker in equal disfavor, whet her rightly or wrongly is not the question in point. The very fact that a great railroad company has concluded that the safety and efficiency of its service will be promoted by tt e cmploy'ient of men who do not smoke cigarettes puts the matter beyond argument, and will have a more far-reaching effect than any step yet taken in the suppression of the cigarette evil. Railroad employes will not be the only ones who will be put to think ing in consequence of this anti-cigarette order. Charlotte Observer. Tested and True. Wood's Seeds The Best for the South. Is the Only Remedy Equal to this Obstinate Disease. is equal to any blood trouble, and never fails to cure Scrofula, because it goes down to the seat of the disease, thus permanently eliminating every trace of the taint. The se-iousconseauences to which Scrofula surelv lends should impress upon those afflicted with it the vital im portance of wasting no time upon treatment which can not possibly effect a cure. In many cases whore the wrong treatment has been relied upon, complicated glandular swellings have resulted, for which the doctors insist that a dangerous surgical operation is necessary. Mr. H. E. Thompson, of Milledgeville. Ga., writes : "A bad case of Scrofula broke out on the glands of my neck, which had to be lanced and caused me much suffering. I was treated for a long while, but the physicians were un able to cure me, and my condition was as bad as when I began their treatment. Many blood remedies were used , but without effect. Some one recommended S. S. S. , and I began to improve as soon as I had taken a few bottles. Continuing the remedy, I was soon cured permanently. ana nave never had a sign of the disease to return."
