By Way of Explanation. In our issue of last week mention was made of a visit in company with Dr. Goode Cheatham, County Health Officer, to the Home for the Aged and Inlirm. We wrote of the sanitary condition and things in general as we saw them, and as explained to us on the Sunday morning previous, without reference to the past and in no spirit or purpose to rellect upon either the intelligence or veracity of the gentlemen who had called our attention to the matter. Yet, in the opinion of some we used language which appears to be capable of such construction. While no such reflec tion was meant in justice to these gentlemen we cheerfully disclaim any thing of the kind. On the contrary we believe them to be both intelligent and truthful. And in this estimate, to quote the language employed in said article, and which might as well have been omitted altogether, we are quite sure those who know them, "and others qualilied to express an intelligent opinion," will heartily concur. Last fall I sprained my left hip while handling some heavy boxes. The doctor I called on said at first it was a slight strain and would soon be well, but it grew worse and the doctor then said I had rheumatism. It continued to grow worse and I could hardly get around to work. I went to a drugstore and the druggist recommended me to try Cham berlain s l ain Balm. I tried it and one half of a 50-cent bottle cured me entirely. I now recommend it to all my friends. Y. A. B. bcock, Erie. Pa. It is for sale by The Dorsey Drug Co. -4 - . Erom the Newport Xevvs. Va., I'refs of the Oth, we take the following ac count of a wedding in that city which will be read with interest by numbers of persons in Henderson. The bride, who is a most worthy and popular young lady, is a native of this town, the daughther of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Clarke, and has many relatives and admiring friends here who will wish for her every joy and happiness of perfect wedded bliss: Dr. William R. Aylett aud Miss Sallie Emma Clarke were united in marriage at G:30 o'clock last evening at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the rector, Rev. J. Francis Ribble, performing the ceremony in the presence of what was probably the largest and most fashionable throng of wedding guests ever gathered together in Newport News. The usual popularity of both the bride and groom was reason in itself for this. The wedding was an extremely pretty one and will be longreinc inhered in social circles. The church was beautifully decorated with palms aud other flowers, and upon the altar, a magnificent candelabra bear ing a score of brightly burning tapers, had been placed. Immediately after half-past six o'clock, the vested choir eutered the church and marched up the aisle singing the beauti ful bridal chorus from the opera of Lohengrin. Immediately following the choir came the maid of honor, Miss Bes sie Aylett, of King William County, the groom s sister. She was attired in a white organdie accordion plaited, chiffon ruffles, with insertion of pointed esprit. She carried a lovelv bouquet of sweet peas. The bride entered on the arm of the matron of honor, her sister, Mrs. Douglas Iliintly Gordon, of Baltimore. She was handsomely robed in white crepede chine, hand tucked, and exquisitely trimmed with lace with touches of pearl trimming. A beautiful bride's veil was caught with a diamond star. Mrs. Gordon was magnificently gowned in violet crepe de chine, with trimmings of renaissance lace. Her neck were en circled with a handsome diamond neck lace, and she wore a girdle of gold. The costume was completed with a pictur esque hat. She also carried a boquet of sweet pens. The bride was met at the altar by the groom, accompanied by his best man, his brother, Mr. Phillip Aylett. of Ports mouth, ;ind the bride's brotherMr. P. B. Clarke, of New York, who gave her away. Over a hundred beautiful and costly presents were received, some of them from friends who are far distant. The tug Alice was tendered by Capt. (ooksey, to take the happy couple to Norfolk. The kind offer was accepted, and the bridal party accompanied by a number of friends, left, last evening about half-past seven o'clock for Norfolk, where the couple bade their friends farewell, and the party separated. Dr. and .Mrs. Aylett leaving on their bridal tour; their fniends returning on the tug to the city. Dr. Aylett is one of the best known physicians in the city and is rapidly ac quiring a very enviable reputation, both as a physician and surgeon. He has not only attained a high rank in his profes sion, but is widly popular socially. His bride, a charming society lady of this city, numbers as her friends, all who know her, for there is, perhaps, no one in the city who has a larger hold upon the admiration and regard of those who ktiow her than has Mrs. Aylett. CASTOR I A For Infants and Children. The Kind You Have Always Bough MARRIAGE OF MISS Bears the Signature of THE MOZART CLUB. Delightfully Entertained at Dr. Cheat ham's on the Evening of June 4th. Among the many pleasant musical evenings which it is the good fortune of the writer to recall, none arc as sociated with more charming recol lections than the occasion o! June -1th. The beautiful home of Dr. Cheatham, on William street, opened wide its hospitable doors to welcome the members of the Mozart Club. In their honor, the rooms were taste fully decorated with plants and cut flowers. It was, indeed, a scene of loveliness which greeted the eve as one passed from the hall, a vista of ferns and palms, into the handsome palors. Here, had conversation's merry flow been stilled, had music's syren tongue been silent, the silence would have been eloquent. The Spirit of Art, in loveliest guise, smiled upon you from the canvases which glow from the walls. Billowy sea, lurreted castle, lovely pastoral land scape all from the same artist hand awoke the musings of poetic Fancy the twin sister of Art. The Genius of Music found here her lit ting en vironment. The program was neces sarily long the class consisting of twenty-four pupils. Their perform ance evidenced remarkable improve ment in technique and expression. Miss Averett has cause to be proud of her pupils and does not hesitate to say that she has never had a more talented, painstaking class. To the teacher what can be more delightful than one of Bach's fugues correctly played by skillful young lingers? Or, some divine thought of Mozart from still younger lingers? Or, a vocal solo well rendered by a sweet, true voice? There are beautiful moments in life for teachers. The program ended with the clos ing chorus from "Mid Summer Night's Dream," successfully given by the junior vocal class. In response to a cordial invitation Prof. Alderman was present, and at the conclusion of the program, delivered an address upon music, which was worthy of its subject. Want of space forbids analy sis. Sullice it to say that it was com prehensive, masterly, brilliant, and was greatly enjoyed. Creams and cakes were then served. Riant mirth seized the hour and wreathed it with garlands of gay verbiage and laughter. But Life's gayest tapestry has in its woof "Fare well's" sombre skein, and at last adienx were made, and the Mozart Club had adjourned for the summer. Its members desire to express to Dr. Cheatham ami Misses Jeunie and Elizabeth Cheatham their sincere ap preciation of the kind invitation and their thanks for a memorably delight ful evening. As a result of the Federal court just ended here, three of "Pritchard's l ets have come t srief. They arc now serving sentences in the common jails of Wake and Hali fax counties for taking money that did uot belong to them while thev were in chanre of the nostnflices to which thev were appointed by Presi dent McKinlev, with the consent of Jeter C. Pritchard and upon the rec ommendation of George H. White. I'he three defaulters all negroes are as follows, with the length of sea- ences they are to serve: Israel D. Hargett, postmaster at Rocky Mount, one year in Wake coun ty jail. C. Y . Battle, postmaster at Battle- boro, nine months in Halifax jail. James M. Pittman, postmaster at fillcry, one year in Halifax jail. liargett was sentenceu yesterday and in delivering the judgment of the court Judge Purnell had some timelv remarks to make. Among other things he said: "It appears from the criminal dock et of this court that the postmasters of the Second district are becominer a stench in the nostrils of the people. This is the third one that has recent- been seut to jail, and there is never term of court that there is not one or two up here charged with some grave crime. "And I can't understand why it is that ollicers of the government con tinue chaffering with criminals and scheming to get them off lijrht. I want to serve notice now and here that this is the last one of these de faulting postmasters that will be sent to jail. Hereafter thev will go to the peniteutiarj'. This man would have gone there but for the pleadings and solicitations of public olncials and others in his behalf." People who have been in court watching the proceedings say that one of the "ollicers of the irovern- ment" Judge Purnell had reference to in his remarks was little Claudie Mel not the Bernard, who imagines he fills the oflice of District Attorney, and who has recently been misrhtv busy rubbing off the blots these ne- gro otlicials have put on Senator Pritchard's fine record.
