THE HENDE11SON GOLD JLEAF THUliSDAY, JAXUAMY 11, 11)06 The Gold Leaf. ESTABLISHED 1881. -BY- THAD R. MANNING. THURSDAY, .1 A X UAH Y"l 1 , 1 1)05. THE PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW. In extending the compliments of the season to itsrealer.s and wishing them a prospftrouH aw happy New Year, the Iteidsville Weekly takes a philosophical view and the correct one we think when it nays: The old year, with its mistakes and shortc omings and sorrows, lias pone beyond recall. Nothing: is to he pained ly worrying: over that which has (dipped from our grasp. If was not what we would have had it let us strive to realize our ideal in am. Let the new year's resolutions Ik? kept, if they are pood ones. Fipht the Wattle a day at a time. Don't worry about tomorrow. ".Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." "Worry never yet h'1jed anybody, but is a positive hindrance. Work is helpful it is the law of nature. Cultivate cheerfulness. Look on the bripht side of life. Do all you can to make the world briphter and better. A NEW YEAR'S GREETING THAT COUNTS. The Mechanics' Perpetual P.uildinp and Loan Association of I'harlotte, S. Wittkowsky, president, in an ad vertisement in the Observer, an nounces the maturity of the .'Hth se ries and its rea'diness to pay off same in cash to non-borrowers and the cancellation of mortpapes. We make the followinp extract from said an nouncement: This is the larpest series we have ever matured, no less than 70.400. OO of which -10,000 will be paid out in cash and .."0,-lOO in the cancella tion of .'54 mortpapes; so that '51 families will celebrate this new yea'; with homes of t heir own. Who will or can measure the contentment, ele vatinp and ennobling influence this will brinp to those families? Comment is unnecessary. The facts and fipures above carry their own comment. The benefits to be derived from Imildinpand Loan Associations by nonborrowcrs and borrowers Hike are so preat that the wonder is that every town f any impor tance does not have one or more of these institutions in successful oper ation. - An Opportunity. (iri'fiiKboro Iinlnstiiiil Vnvs. Many and important problems are now confront inp t he people of Nort li Carolina nloup all lines, but there is no onevamonp the nuiubev greater than the (piestion of developinp the preat natural resources of the State. (Jeoprnphieal and peolopicnl differ ences make the various portions of the State dissimilar, but each and every portioa has been plentifully and richly endowed by nature and nature's piftsawait the hand of thrift and enterprise. We boast of ninny of our achieve ments, and boast with pood reason, but too littleattention is paid to the quest ion of establishing in small units various enterprises throuphout the rrral districts and small towns. A larpe factory or mill in a larpe town adds much to the business and prosperity of that city. Hut a dozen small factories do far more pood than one larpe one, and are moreover within the reach of men whose limited means prevents the establishment of a mammoth plant. This is too much an ape of bip thinps. The people have potten the fever for bipness and this has made them neplect smaller but epially at tractive opportunities. The raw material for almost every kind of manufacturinp plant may be found broadcast, over the State, em ployees may be easily potten in the small towns and the runi'inp expen ses are comparatively low. The man who today makes money for himself and prosperity for the State is the man who makes thinps r who turns into finished products the formerly useless raw material which lias lieen put within our reach but must, by its very nature, remain useless until it receives the mapic touch of man. Miss Ann Hendricks Plummcr. "Blessed nre the pure in heart for they shull see ISoil." . Died, nt the home of her brother, J. K. riummcr, V.i., nenr Mhhlloburg. nt 7:30 n. in., en Jnnnnry 4th. li0. Miss Ann Hendricks Plumnior. eldest daugh ter of the late lamented Or. Alfred I'lu miner, of this (Vance) county, in the 71st year of her nee. She was truly a Rood woman. Though for years in poor health, she bravely met and cheer fully performed every duty and evaded no responsibility. Not mnrryinj. she de voted moot of her mature life to the in terest, comfort ami pleasure of her age ing father nnd to the rearing of two or phan nephews, nnd nobly did she do her part. She had no enemj and numbered her friends by an acqaintance that ex tended far beyond the limits of her State. Kvery one that knew her loved nnd highly esteemed "Cousin" or "Mian Ann" and loved to goto her beautiful hospitable home (Helvue.) The deceased was long a member of the Episcopal church, though for years unable to attend the service she loved her church and delighted in the daily reading of her bible. Surely (as far as mortals can le the judge) her long and beautifully consistent Christian life jus- tines nnd makes appropriate the above quotation. She leaves n. very large family connection nnd a host of friends many of whom live in distant pnrta to to mourn her loss. At her request her body was taken to boydton, Va., for interment and in the t-.piscopai cnurcu vard of that historic old town, by ten der hands nnd loving hearts, her body was gently lowered into the silence of the grave," by the side of a nephew she re'vrwi and so dearly loveu. liev. .Mr Striugfellow, officiating. A Rev iew of the Situation at the Close ; of 1905 Oulok for the New Year ! in Bi2ht and Favorable. I'.otli tin; li;ik'ili Xews mul Obser ver ;uil the ( liailotte Observer in tlifir issues of last Sunday, ravu con siderable sjace to a review of the progress made by Norili Carolina, towns duriii; 100.", and the outlook for the New Year. These article were contributed by local correspondents, (the mayors of the towns writing for ' the Xews :nnl Observer) and are full of interest, information and encour agement. They make a jrood show in; for the industrial jrrowth and de velopment and business expansion marked by thisood State front one end to the other and in riviu' pub licity thereto in this collective form these papers have rendered a public service. Mayor Sout herland's response to the Xews ;iwl Observer was that the excellent article recently written and published by the editor of that paper after a visit to Henderson covered the ".round and its reproduction would serve the purpose. (This arti cle was printed in the fion Leak last week.) The correspondent of the Charlotte Observer contributed t hefollowine- nbout Henderson: Henderson, Jan. 1. The progress of Henderson durine; the past ye.'r has been more in the nature of a steady jrrowth and expansion of the exist iur interests than of any strik ing revival of trade or foundinr of i:ew enterprises. No town can boast of a more substantial and conserva tive set of business men than Hen derson, or of more wholesome condi tions of business than at present ob tain here. The outlood for the new year is very bright and favorable. The numerous and varied enterprises of the town are, perhaps, without, ex ception, in uncommonly healthy and vigorous condition, there is every promise of sturdy frrowth and ex pansion and the future development of business interests is projectinr alonr sane and normal lines. While steady jrrowth is inevitable under these exist in -r Conditions, anything like a panic or serious nnd "eneral commercial backset is practically im possible. The town has shared, to the fullest extent, the oeneral pros perity of the country at this time, and lias transacted a larger volume of business than everv before in its history; 1 '.( must be marked by growth and expansion. Anion": the new enterprises that have been started within the past vear is a surrv factorv, which, under the same manaireineiit as theCorbitt Ibiir-ry Factory, has done a larjre volume of business, the combined plants beinr pressed to the utmost to fill orders. Hie V irst national Bank of Henderson closes its first year in splendid condition, the entire vear havinjr been one ot stead v pro- jrres and enlargement. Its record has full v vindicated the wisdom ot such an institution, and reflects credit upon the mauajrement. Two wholesale groceries were es tablished in 190."t, the Henderson Grocery Company, which bourht out the business of Mr. W . S. l'arker, liavinjr fully sustained the credit of that old and reliable firm; and the Sturres & Shell Grocery Company, a new firm, composed of thoroughly experienced members and which is doinjr alarjreand increasing business. In addition to these there have bi-en some smaller mercantile businesses bejrun i'i the past year. At the same THE "DODGING PERIOD of a woman's life, is the name often given to the "change of life." Your menses come at leng intervals, and grow scantier until they stop. Some women step suddenly. The entire change lasts three cr four years, and it is the cause cf much pain and discomfort, which can, however, be cured, by taking WINE OF Woman's Relief It quickly relieves the pain, nervousness, irritability, miserable ness. forgatfulness, fainting, dizziness, hot and cold flashes, weak ness, tired feeling, etc. Cardui will bring you safely through this "dodging period," and build up your strength for the rest cf your life. Address: La dies' Advisory Dept., The Chattanooga Medicine Co., Chattanooga, Tenn. Powder time nearly all the older business houses of the town have improved or enlarged their quarters and in many cases have greatly extended their business. The past year has been marked by some municipal improvements of great walue ami inportance. A hand some and costly graded school build ing for the white children is almost completed and will le ready for oc cupancy in a short while. This build ing will be complete and up-to-date in all particulars, and will be a great credit to the town. A commodious brick building has also been secured for the colored graded schooi aud thoroughly fitted up for school pur puses. Nothing accomplished during the past year has added more to the ap pearance and comfort of the town than the improvements of the streets. The main street has lieen macadam ized, stone curbings and drains pui in, and the side-walks of the business streets covered with granolithic pave ment Granolithic pavements have been laid also to the churches, public buildings and many private resi dences, and pavements of vitrified brick have been laid on many side streets, an improvement that is to be extended in the near future. All. this has added immensely to the looks of the town, as well as enhanc ing business interests and the value of real estate, the latter having con stantly increased, building lots ad vancing from '50 to 40 per cent, in the last three or four years. With the new streets, the sewerage system has been materially improved and enlarged, .practically extending throughout the entire town and is constantly being introduced into other homes and business houses. A valuable feature of Henderson commercial life is t he fact that it has comparatively little foreign capital, nearly all of its enterprises being owned and run by citizens who are thoroughly identified with the com mercial, social and moral life of the town. Its business men are here to live and not. simply to make money, and their views and purposes take in more than mere increase of capital. Having a dispensary, the town is free of the bar-room and comparative ly free of its viciousiiessand demorali zing accompaniments. Henderson has scarcely any slums, and is singularly free from junk-shops and filthy and ill smelling back streets, stands aud shops, as dangerous to health and property as thegroggery is to morals and good order. The old ramshackle frame"buildings that were in evidence a few years ago, here and there, are rapidly disappearing, being replaced bv brick stores and attractive resi dences. Quite a number of hand some homes have been built in the past year, with mai.y more to follow in T.IOG. Chronic Constipation Cured. One who suffers from chronic constipation is in danger of many serious ailments. Orino Laxative Fruit Syrup cures chronic consti pation as it aids digestion and stimulates the liver and bowels, restoring the natura action of these organs Commence taking it today and yon will feel better at on 3 . Orino Laxative Fruit. Syrup does not nanseate or gripe and is very pleasant to take. Refuse substitutes. Melville Dorsey, druggist. Hon. A. 1). Watts of Statesville, private secretary to Senpator Sim mons, visited Governor Winston last week. He is the author of the Watts bill. Windsor Ledger. Author in name only. It is an open secret that Senator Simmons drafted the bill in question, with the assistance of certain others, and Watts introduced and "fathered" it. Hence the perpetuation of the name of the Iredell statesman. 99 5R "EVERYTHING BUT DEATH 1 suffered," writes Virginia Robson, of Easton, Md., ''until I took Cardui, which cured m so quickly it surprised my doctor, who didn't knew I was taking it."
