THE HENDERSON GOLD LEAF THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1906. . - The Gold Leaf. THURSDAY, JANUARY 11 , 1907. un New Years Day Ii Gay Paree ' T is ia Pari that New Year's day le jour de I'an receives its most complete observance. Christmas ' has for centuries been tbe great feast clay of The AnIo-Saxon, Christ mas with its roust beef and turkey and Ium puddbig and all the rest of it that everybody knows so well. I'aris, too, has Clirlstica, but a Christmas that plaj's only second fiddle to the more whleiy celebrated jour de l au. As for the day itself--that K the day outside, the weather New Year' a day in Taris generally i3 bleak, muddy, tossy, drizzling. Thousands stand bblv eriug in patent leather shoes and dress feults wailing lor the empty cabs that never teetn to come. But iu the house where one calls there are light, warmth and cordiality. Calling is the great distinctive fea ture of the day. Everybody mutually makes calls and receives calls. m They run out to leave their cards ou some body and dash back to receive the visit of somebody -I.se. The president of the French republic and the military governor of Paris re ceive In great and gorgeous state. Their receptions are formal, ceremoni ous, Impressive and make a sight to Bee. Outside the Elysee and ihe In valided the patient Parisians crowd by the thousands to await the advent of the generals in their uniforms, the diplomats In their regalias, the decorat ed ones who sport the collars and tbe ribbons of their orders; the extraor dinary municipal council of Pari In their funereal dress auits, the deputies and senators and all the functionaries of the military and civil branches. While this takes place all the official world beneath is even more laborious ly occupied. You cannot look out the window In Paris without feeiug a gov ernment functionary or his wife. The civil service is systematized so minute ly that five clerks do the work of one. One voter in every ten is a government IHE "Yellow Leaf Blight" and "Red Leaf Blight," so disastrous to cotton, are both attributed, by the highest author ities, to impoverished soil lack of Potash and nitrogen. In fact, these authorities advise liberal fertilizing with mixtures con taining Kainit-. as the prime preventive. "Cotton Culture," an authoritative book of 90 pages shows, from actual photographs, healthy cotton plants fertilized with Kainit, alongside diseased plants not fertilized with Kainit yours for the asking, absolutely free. Now, as every one detests the drudgery of it. leaving of one's card in person first came to be looked upon as an accept able substitute for a real visit. In the hurry it will hot be noticed if you send your clerk or valet out distributing. For such cards as may be sent by mail the procedure has become a sys tem. At the post office- a special service for the handling of these cards is organiz ed made up of women hired from the middle of leeember. In the sixth story, underneath the roof of the cen tral Farls postoffice building, a great ball runs its length. Here 300 women sit at counters, classifying the little en velopes all day long. The cards begin to come as early as Dec. 10. and they continue passiug through the post as late as Jan. 10. By that date 9,000,000 cards will have been handled for the capital alone. Some people hire clerks to post their acquaintances' books during the month that the cards are flying. Oth ers have their poor relations coaie and do the work for them. Montreal Star.
