Published by the Vcindersloot Music Company, Wil liamsport, Ta. Mr. Lincoln has many bir hits to his credit. Among others he has composed the following: "Heaven's Artillery" march, "The Palm Limited" march, "The Buffalo Flyer" march, "Midnight Fire Alarm'' march, "A. Southern Dream" waltzes, "Vallaraont" Reverie, etc., etc., which have an international rep utation. In a criticism of the song "Just at the Break of Day," the Williamsport Sun says: Beside being a recital of an incident that appeals to sympathy, the author. Harry J. Lincoln, has caught the spirit of patriotic pathos that clings to the human heart and entwines itself on one's memory like the lingering echo of some sad, sweet story. And the rythm too, appealing to the ear like the melody of a cadence born of joy, leads one from pleas ure to ecstatic blisjs and one wishes, when the song is done, that it might go on forever. Julius Steele, A. B. Tinsley, Practical Painters. Painting ; practical work. Skill wins. It's the same with paint making. You know 4 gallons L.AM mixed with 3 pallons Linseed Oil makes enough paint for a moderate sued house the best paint money can buy because the L. & M. Zinc hardens the L. & M. White Lead and makes the L. i M. Paint wear lik iron. Buy L.4 M. and don't pay $1.50 a gallon for Linseed Oil, as yon do in ready-for-nse paint, but buy oil fresh from the barrel at 60 cents and mix with L4U. L. A M. costs only $1.20 per gallon. Material That is Destinett to Take the Place of Lime Plaster as a Wall Finish. The inside work (wall finish) of D. W. Hardee's new store building htxs attracted more than usual attention and favorable comment. Persons who have stopped to enquire are told that the material used is wood fibre plaster. This is something new iu these parts but it has been tested by years of use elsewhere and adopted by leading builders and contractors as greatly superior to lime plaster. Contractor Weaver was the first to introduce wood fibre plaster in Hen derson. It was first used on the ad dition to Mr. J. L. Currin's residence last fall. The contract calls for the new Graded School building to be finished with it. Wood fibre plaster is as far supe rior to lime plaster as that is to or dinary clay mud. The cost is a little more about three cents a square yard but when you put it on a wall it there to stay. It will not crack or peel off and can be worked in all kinds of weather. One hour to put it on and an hour to "set" and the severest freeze does not affect it. You can drive a nail in it without crack ing and when withdrawn a clean round hole is left as if it had been driven in a piece of wood. The com position of the material cement rock and wood ground together by a secret process shows that it pos sesses qualities and advantages over any other known plastering mate rial. Manufactured by the Greensboro Wood Fibre Plaster Co., Greensboro, N. C. It invigorates, strengthens and builds up. It keeps you in condition physically, mental ly and morally. Ben Franklin, whose 200th birth an niversary falls in this month, is limned in t he January National Magazine as "The American Confucius." The author of this ingenious conception of "our one world's man" also sketches briefly and brilliantly the character and works of Thomas Paine, the "Horace Greeley of the American Revolution" and the im mortal author of "The Age of Reason." These character studies are from the pen of John McGovern of Chicago, one of our most scholarly and poetic historians. Kate Sanborn reviews the "Autobiog raphy" of Dr. Andrew White, a really great living American, and Charles War ren Stoddard depicts delicately, sympa thetically, yet intimately, the inner life of one of the best known women in our history "Kate Field, Cosmopolite." Other features of the number are: "The Mullatto Negro: The Yellow Peril of the North," by Annie Riley Hale a paper that will open the eyes of the northern readers to social changes taking place very quietly and which are of the high est importance to all Americans; "Cow boy Life in the far Southwest," a series of seven typical ranch scenes reported photographically; "Doing Three Great World-Capitals in Three Weeks; by Joe Mitchell Chappie, and "Beauties of the American Stage," by Helen Arthur. The-e are three brilliant stories, strong poems by Ernest McGaffey, Jasper Bar nett Cod win and others, and the usual departments "Affairs at Washington," illustrated; "The Home." and Frank Put num's "Note and Comment." Drafess Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by con stitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When tins tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or im perfect hearing, and when it isentirely closed, deafness is the result, and unless the inflam mation can be taken out and this tube re stored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed conditiouof the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall'sCatarrh Cure. Send for circulars free. F. ,T. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, 0. Gooch entertained his friends last Friday evening in the Iteautiful rooms of the Croatan Club. About eeventy-five were present. Few youncriien in Henderson have been welcomed as quests as often as Mr. Gooch, but the character of host iH a new one to him. We had a prac tical demonstration on this occasion that the qualities and accomplish ments of a successful host may be inherent, and are not necessarily dependent upon lonp: practice. Our host received his guests iu the hall with ease and dignity. Mrs. F. It. Harris served fruit puueh. It was delicious and refresh ing. Under her supervision it is not necessary to add that it was strictly "The cup that cheers but not ine briates." Progressive Nations entertained the party an hour or more then came ice cream in figures representa tive of many nations Japanese girls standing with fans and parasols that opened and shut were a novel feature. Misses Helen Lamb, Aileen Lewis, Maria Tucker and Lalla Burton served the cream and cake, and later handed beautiful little souvenirs. The chaperones were: Mesdames George B. Harris, J. H. Quaiity of Beer Depends Upon Su periority of Materials, Treatment and flaturity. Purity is a universal essential in all beers. The observance of cleanliness and sterilization will secure it. Healthfulness, combined with flavor and taste, constitutes real quality, and these are impossible without the very best materials and the highest order of treatment. This is what science and ex perience teach. Quality, depending upon the character of materials and the methods employed, is the real goal or competition among brewers. Materials: To provide the public with a really good, palatable and wholesome beer of the highest quality, we use the best barley-malt, the highest grade hops superior yeast, and in our pale beers a small per centage of rice. In all otr beers we use the best and purest mate rials, regardless of cost. Corn we never use although it is not excluded by authority, and has the ad vantage of cheapness. We use no sub stitute of any kind to reduce our ex pense. We spare neither money nor care to fortify and increase our well-earned and long-established reputation. Treatment and Maturity: We employ only the most modern methods in brew ing; our latest acquisition being 200 glass-lined steel tanks made by the 1'faudler Co of Rochester, New York. The beer affer leaving the brew kettles, is conveyed to glass enameled fermenting vats. After fermentation it is lagered, aged from four to five months in the glass lined steel tanks before it is bottled; thus absolute purity of our beer is in sured, because it is in glass from the time it is brewed until it is consumed. Our present storing capacity of 600,000 barrels is more than that of any other two breweries iu the world. These facil ities enable us to age our beer the length of time necessary to guarantee its purity and maturity not in printers' ink but in fact. For these reasons Budweisr, the King of Bottled Beers, must and does com mand a higher price t han any other beer, and at the same time has a greater sale than all other bottled beers. The conduct of a wealthy Pittsburjr (Pa.) man abroad and newspaper stories of the doings of others afford ed themes for prominent clergymen in their Christmas sermons. The re cent scandals current about William E. Corey the steel king, wjs perhaps the chief cause of this phase of the discourses. A Pittsburg press dis patch says: The lltv. John L.Jayne. pastor of the Observatory Hill Christian Church, speaking on ''Chords and Discords in Our Christmas Anthems," said in his ser mon: "Our newspapers reek with the scan dal of rich m-sn smashing the tenderest of ties and violating for the sake of pas sion the holiest of obligations. We read of so-called Christian men posing as the friend of boys and young men when at home, yet leading the double life when away from the restraints of convention ality and church relations. "We read of multi-millionaries for saking the wives of their youth, who have toiled with them through the days of their poverty, and lusting after strange women, whose only ornaments are their pretty faces. We read of Sun day school teachers and Bible school superintendents scattering their money with lavish hand to build up a great school and then by acts of sheer dwiltry breaking down their influence. " 'Our divorce courts are crowded to the doors, not only with dissatisfied men and women in the lower walks of life and the middle, but in the so-called higher, where culture is supposed to feign, but where, alas! 'cussedness' sits trinmpant, viewing with joy the work of home breaking it has achieved. 'We are reading to-day of fifteen so called leaders of finance, fashion and faithfulness who are suing or who are about to sue in our divorce courts for divorce from their wives on the ground of incompatibility. "Presumably a true hearted woman is incompatible to her husband when she refuses to consent for him to intensify the bright white light of Broadway with the flames of a degrading passion. Any decent wife would be incompatible under such circumstances, and she should be so incompatible for the sake of her ehildren, who are disgraded by such a father, no matter what his millions or his standing in church and society.''
