The doors stand wide open figu rati vely speaking, and Jailor Falkner looks lonesome amid the "banquet hall deserted." Two prisoners (both negroes) have been serving out short terms imposed at February court. One of these has been out sometime and the remain ing one got his liberty Tuesday. This speaks well for the county and is a record of which we have cause to feel proud. And the indications are that the May term of court will have but lit tle to do. No true bills were found b3 the last gracd jury requiring capiases to issue and there is no jail case for May court. A few small cases are on docket but the parties are out on bond. Three of the most important cases on the civil docket have been compromised and the term will be a short one in consequence. A GUARANTEED CURE FOR PILES. Itching, Blind, Bleeding, Protruding Piles. The medicines pre scribed all failed to help me, and I could not take cod liver oil or emulsions, as the greasy mixtures upset my stomach. One of our county officials told me about your delicious cod liver preparation, Vinol, and what it had done for him. I decided to try it, and in a remarkably short time I was a well man. Vinol built me up, cured my stomach and nervous trouble and I have not been so well for years." Our local druggist, W. W. 'j Roads and Other Things New Scheme in the Temperance Movement By Making Roads Impassable Country Folks Can Not Get to The Dispensary In that Event Henderson Would Have to Drink all the Mean Li quor Herself or Improve the Brand. Primrose Lawn. Vance County, North Carolina. Dkai: Mil L'wtoii: The (iood Pook forbids women folks to talk in church, because they do their full share of talk ing outside, I reckon. But ns I can t find w here it forbids them to talk in the papers, I make bold to indite you a few lines, especially as my subject is such a bi;r one. I low noble it i.s to do good by stealth and have it found out by accident. How grateful we ought to be that right here in our midst, right here in Vance county, there are the wisest and most potent bauds of temperance workers on the planet. And men so modest withal th;it they do their g;ood work covertly, suf fering not their left hand to know what their rfght hand doeth. I mean. Mr. Kditor, the me'ii who are spending on the public roads the money we borrowed a bit back. We simple folks would have spent that money very differently. We should, I feu r.hnve taken a low, material, utilitarian view of the matter. We might have spent it in tak ing bumps out of the road. They in their greater wisdom spent it in putting more humps in. In a word, we should have made it easy to get to the ends of the road Henderson. These inspired men with moral intent deep and pro found, are doing just the opposite. They are making it impossible to got to Hen derson. And here is where the temperance work, the grand moral (; d'i-t;it comes in. Henderson has a dispensary. A dispensary dispenses liquor. Liquor dispenses curses the father of curses and the mother too we all admit. What can be nobler than to build a Chinese wall or better still dig a Vance county road between men and this father of curses. It may cause some slight incon venience to we country folks and to the Henderson folks to be forever kept apart. But the (iood Book tells us to lop off not only a few wants, but even a limb or so to kfep morally whole. It would he a great loss to see Henderson no more; but it would be a greater gain to make teetotelers of the w hole county. But to do that we must not forget the roads to the moonshine stills. We must work them all and in the same wav. I'll lav all the men keep sober, keep to home and keep their families. Ix.'t's do it quick too. because when the world hndsout.as it soon must, the true result of the work of our road workers we shan't be able to keep them. True they havn't made the roads quite impassable in summer, but that was our fault. We did not give them quite money enough. They will do that by-and-by. A female Solomon described a straw as a hollow thing with a Hk- drink at one end and a ;c man at the other. How nicely last winter that description fitted our roads hollow things with dranes at one end and men at the other. Onlv she overvalued the things at the ends of the thing, 1 am sure. I should hate to ftive 10c for the one. 1 know 1 wouldn't give rc for the other. This accounts for my spinsterhood. 1 or I could have had a dozen husbands had I the mind, or the face. PAMLLIA PRIM. P. S. It might be fatal to Henderson to cut off we countrv folks and condemn her to drink all her mean liquor herself. But then she would have to get a better brand or else kick the bucket. She ought to do one or the other anyhow. I', l". The Richest Man in the World.
