Thursday, May 10th. .Memorial Day, was observed in Henderson by several hundred people. Very ap propriate oxenios wen- held in Elm wood Cenieterv. the address lein by Uev. L. L. Nash, I). D.,of the M. K. Church. The procession formed at 10:.'!0 A. .M. at the M. K. Church, and proceeded, some on foot, some in car riages, t the Cemetery. It was headed as usu il bv the members of Henry A. Vyatt(.'iniiofConfedeiate Veterans, and with its loiio- Hue of carriages, gaily decorated with Hags, streamers and a profusion of flowers, presented an imposing-spectacle. At the (inided School all the children joined in. materially .swelling; the pa rade. The crowd drew up near the gate of t h; Cemetery, and there the exercises were held. .Mr. .1. C. Kit trell acting as Master of Ceremonies announced the programme. I'rayer was offered by Kev. .1. H. Henderlite. Chaplain of Wyntt Camp, and all the assemblage joiiu il in t he hearty sing ing of ''Carolina." Mr. Kittrell then i nt rod need t he dim! or of t he day, Dr. Nash, who delivered an uncommonly graceful and interesting; address. The speaker made the burden of his discourse th righteousness of the Confederate cause, and spoke of the necessity of educating; the children of t he South upon those great rjuestions of States' Uights and Const itut ional principles involved in the awful strug gle of the sixt ies. He jiaid eloquent, and beautiful tributes to the leaders of tin; CoiiTi'deracy and t he Cofedera to soldier. He also spoke wit li discriminating- appreciation of the old Southern negro, and his fidelity dur ing the days of the conflict, of his treatment at the hands of the true Southern gentleman. and the remark able progress made by the race in all directions during the days of slavery, a progress unprecedented in the his tory of the world. Dr. ash dis cussed the questions nt issue in this great struggle' between the Slates in a most luminous and masterful way, and for half an hour held the closest attention of the large assemblage. As an old Confederate lie was thor oughly at home with his subject, and he had his audience with him. After the address Mrs. S. K. How land very effectively sang ''All Quiet Along the Polomae To-night," and there were few dry eves among the gray and grizzled veterans, as the tragedy and fender pathos of those times that tried men's souls were re called by t In singer. The entire assembly then joined in an enthusiastic rendering of "The I'.onny Klue Flag," and 1 he Benedic tion was pronounced by Hew YV. F. Kennel t. The graves of those sol diers who sleep in Klmwood Ceme tery were decorated bv loval and nder hand-', after which i he people dispersed, giad to have had another opport unity of honoring the cause which t he Sout h will ever count it her pride to honor. The grave of a Federal soldier bu ried in t he Ceineterv was decorated along with the graves of the Con federate dead, no distinction being made in t he honor paid to his mem ory, so tar as the profusion and beaut v of flowers was concerned. And this was a tribute paid, not to! .1... -li? ,i .i. ! i ue man ami menu, necauso t lus man a citizen of the State of New York died a stranger among us. but to t he soldier who fought for his coun try ami did his duty as he saw it in t ha t cause and on t ha t side upon his lort lines were cast .
