"Men of Mark." Tliuiiiiisvilli- limit v ami liiililivn. 1 1 is a gre: at thing to be a man of mark- mid in a few years we are go ing to have n book published that wiTl do us big men justice. At first it was decided that only three hundred of us would appear, but the business lias been so lively that it is proposed to put not less than a thousand of us in black and white, and it maybe, if the country prospers and cotton keeps up, the number may be in creased to ten thousand and the liQfidLJiP.Iianl1,'l by steam power. tf rm rmt thf renson for the cinmor they raise lies on the surface. They do not appear upon the radiant pages. They are right good looking but they can't come in. They say the whole business is based on ego tism and self-conceit, and that the promoters of the work are fattening on the weakness of their victims and hugely enjoying t he joke. A vaunt, galled jades, why reveal your motive by 3'our wincing? Future generations will put on their spectacles and read over the long list of heroic names preserved on these precious pages with breathless interest. Another base insinuation is made which we re-eat with all t he force at our com mand. That is, that the press has been easy on this game of graft be cause the editors have been promised a page apiece. We scorn this false and malicious slander and refuse to give it any further consideration. We condole with the few who are yet on the outside! However, the time and the opportunity are not over past. I letter step up and arrange with theCap'n before it is everlast ingly too late. - Office-Holding Families. Sittiford Kxpn-KM. The Wilmington .Ucs.se-Hger of re cent date says: The Kitchin family in quite nn ottiee holding one. The late W. II. Kitchin wns a ineinlier of Congress. J lis two eldest sons have liecn in Congress for severnl terms, and now a third eon. A. I'. KiU-hin. announces himself a candi date for the legislature from Halifax county. Isn't there a fourth brother whom the Pemocrats can put 011 the bench? Referring to the above the Hender son (1oli Lkak says: There may not be a fourth brother whom the Democrats can put on the bench yet awhile, but there are several more of the "Kitchiu hoys," all bright, manly young fellows, w ho will be heard from later as worthy sons of a worthy sire, whether in the role of otliee-holders or not. The Kitchin family is indeed a remarkable family remarkable in other respects guides holding ottiee, unique as that is. We believe there id not another ease on record where two brothers have served in Congress from the same State at the same time, aud one of them from the district represented by his father be fore him. The Kitchins are not the only otflce-holding family in the State. There are the Dockerys, Republicans, of Richmond county, who have made office-holding a profession. General Alfred Dockery was an office holder, and so was his son, the late Col. Oliver II. Dockery. Henry Dockery, another son of General Dockery, was until recently an office-holder. 'When lie got ready to lay down his office, that of U. S. Marshal of the Eastern District of .North Carolina, he turned it over to a nephew, Claudius Dock ery, who holds the office now. Claud ius Dockery's brother, Oliver Dock ery, holds an office ia the United States army. Settle Dockery, a son of Henry Dockery, and a Democrat, has held office. It is his ambition to go to Congress in the near future. The Dockerys, like the KitchinB, bear the stamp of ability. Twenty Years Battle. "I was a loser in a twenty year battle with chronic piles and malignant sores, until I tried Bncklen's Arnica Salve, which turned the tide, by curing both, till not a trace re mains," writes A. M. Bruce, of Farmville, Va. Befit for old Ulcers, Cuts, Burns and Wounds. 35c at Melville Dorsey's drug etore. RALEIGH LETTER. Ookmax News Bureau, Raleigh, X. C, July 2. 1 a rrnd deal of interest is manifested in the visit of Secretary of War Taft (who may be the neit Republican nominee for president) to Greensboro next week, where he will make a political address on the evening preceding the assembling of the Republican .State convention, anu the announcement of .State Chairman Seneer Adams that Secretary 01 tne Treasury Shaw (who would like to be the presidential nominee of his party) has consented to make several speeches in the Eighth and Tenth congressional Its liHtric-ts during the approaching cam- naurn. Mf-rctary laii win upm. uhi .Monday night, instead 01 luesuuy at me convention, lecaue he nas to nil a pre- iously made engagement in Uhio on Wednesday, and most leave North Caro lina Monday night or early luesday morning. Consequently a much larger number of delegates than usual will ar rive for the convention the day preceding the beginning of the work of that body, which will be principally cnaracierizeu by the fight between the present office holding element and the Ulackburnites for control of the State organization. This leirir an off year in State polities, with only one official prize in the politi cal grab-bag, there ia not much doing, excent in the county and congressional contests. Even the choice of a legisla ture this year, which will have the selec tion of a t'nited States senator, is dis counted by the fact that the election of that high othcer will be merely lormai and a very jierfunctory affair, because 01 the candidacy of only one aspirant, Sen ator Simmons having no opposition. A little gin.er is being injected into the local campaign (that is to say, the pri mary) in this county over the nomina tion of candidates tor btate senator, sheriff and county commissioners, and in consequence of a proposition to cut down the income of the principal county otticers who now receive fees instead of stated salaries. It is alleged that the county clerk, the register of deeds and the sheriff of V ake county are all receiving a net in come in fees of over .",000 each annu ally, while the sheriff of Wake did realize over xh ,000 a year up to two years ago. when the legislature reduced his commis sions for collecting taxes, in excess, of ."0,000, which cut off $:J,000 from the amount he had been realizing from that source. The proposition is to change the law 111 its application to W ake and the other larger counties and give these county officers all regular Hat or stated salaries, all in excess of that amount to be covered into the county treasuries and thereby lighten the county tax rate. Although the indications are that this will be done, there is 110 lack of candi dates over the prospects, there heingfour for the shrievalty, all of whom will be glad to get the $ :,000 a year which that official will probably be hereafter al lowed. In (luilford and some other counties, I believe, the fiat salary law is already applicable to the sheriff .and some other county othcers. 1 1 would be a good thing for deceucy's sake and for the welfare of many poor and ignorant people 11 this Hat salary rule could beaiilied to the army of mag isterial scavengers of all the counties. It is little short of highway robbery, and much more oppressive, if a small portion of 1 lie reports are true, for these ehort- tnil element of the justices of the "piece to set their legal traps for extorting fees and "costs'' out of the thousands of poor people who are mulcted by them all over North Carolina, through the alleged "trial of trivial cases trumpeu up in many instances for the oue and sole pur jiose of bleeding the defendants, who are dismissed upon the payment of costs, hut who are sent to jail if the costs are not promptly paid. It is a rare thing for some of these little errafters to turn in .vax MU3Cjr njLUJatnUeafliLS gty fee-hntiting constable,-to line" thelrtT!?5 own niuiviuuai pockets. Why not cut down the number of magistrates to only as many ns are needed and then pav a few good men a reasonable salary "in efich county to fill the places? This is no passing observation. It is a serious and very real question, as many people per sonally have knowledge of, and it is a reform within the province of the next legislature which would meet with the approval and hearty commendation of the great majority of our people all over theState. Wake county will be represented in the nest .State senate by a man who will probably make one of the most efficient and popular senators the county hasever had, Hon. John V. Drewry, who accept ably served in the house four years ago. Air. Drewry is one of the most successful and capable business men in North Caro lina and he is a man of a high order of ability and learning, a graduate of the I nivermty of Virginia, where he also re ceived his degree in the law. However, he has never practiced that profession, the last twenty years of his life being de voted chiefly to building up what is now his large insurance business. For fifteen years he has been one of the most promi nent figures in ltaleigh business and mu nicipal affairs, this city owing to him more than to any and all other men the beautifully paved streets and sidewalks which are so much admired by all who visit the capital of the State. Those who know Mr. Drewry well and are acquaint ed with his private life aud personal traits of character will tell you that he is a man in a thousand so far above the average is he. But, like nearly all men who really amount to anything and who do things, he has made some enemies, and a minority element has been trying to get out an opponent to contest for the senate with him. The old cry of this crowd that no lawyer should be elected ta the legislature had to be changed to fit the circumstances of the case, and so they have been endeavoring to put insur ance men under the ban. It was laugh able to discover recentv that the man whom they trotted out against Drewry is not only a lawyer but an insurance agent as well. All of which gives addi tional evidence of what an ass the aver age demagogue and constitutional kicker can make of himself in a Democratic pri mary. If every county in North Carolina could induce one of their citizens nf th ! Drewry calibre to serve in the general as sembly, we wot.ld have a legislature here next winter that would reallv lie worth while. The annual convention of North Caro lina farmers liegins here on Tuesday of next week, July 10th, and continues three days. There will be thirty ad dresses delivered duriag that time, mostl v on subjects ot peculiar interest to farm ers. Among the speakers will be three connected with the United States Depart ment of Agriculture. During the three days' convention of the general farmers' organization there will be meetings held by six divisions of that organization, or rather of six asso ciations whose members are also identi ties with the general organization, to wit: The State Dairymen's Association the North Carolina Division of the South ern lotton Association, the Knrmpra' Protective Association (tobacco ctow- ers), the State Poultry Association and .uc " unini n 1 'i vision 01 me ctate con vention. The last named will be ad dressed by several female sneakers of lialeigh and elsewhere. The annual meeting of the North Caro lina Teachers' Association, which has been in progress here for three weaks, will end with the close of this week. Llewxam. When the World Goes Wroojc.
