A North Carolina liepulilieaii de clines a lY-iieral office which pays two thousand dollars salary and several liundred in fees annually. This is a .statement hard to believe; yet such announcement is made from Wash ington. When all the circumstances are known, thouirh. we can hardly be surprised. The person is Mr. W. S. Pearson, of I'.urke county, and the oflice is that of consul at Hobart, Tasmania. The Xrws.intl I .sejier'.s correspondent says that. Mr. l'earson declined the appointment for the same reason that Mr. W. K. Henry turned down thetender of theconsul tdiipto Curacoa. The latter gentle man "would not stand a country where yellow fever, ejreen lizards, anil horned fros are the principal pro ducts.'" No doubt, like Mr. Henry, Mr. l'earson thouehthisabilitiesand past set vices to the party should re ceive frreat or recognition, and that he would have what he, in hisopinion, deserved or would take nothing. While Mr. l'earson may think he de serves a much bet ter position, the one offered him is, as far as surroundings are concerned, far preferable to the one Mr. Henry turned down. Tas mania lies about as far South of the equator as does North Carolina to the North of it. Croni the Century Diet iunnrv and Kney eloped ia we find the following description of the place: An island and British colony in Aus tralasia, situated Smith of Australia. Hcparateil by Bass straits, capital Ilo Imrt. Its Biirface is largely mountainous or hilly. It lias r,,n,j agricultural re source and mines uf fjold, tin. etc., and exports w ool. Ruld, tin. etc. It is one of the States of the commonwealth of Aus trnli:t. under a r,vernor. legislative power heine; vested in a council and as sembly, (both leini elected I. The abo rigines are extinct. Area !'.. "5S." Hipiare miles; population 177."! 10. Hobart, the capital, lies in latitude -lti;."i"J South, and has a population of about LTi.dOO. So it will be seen that there are not near so many ob jectionable features to this appoint ment as to the one tendered Mr. Henry and witJi which the A'eu.s- ;ui t)hsi'i vt'r correspondent compares it; but it is a mighty lone; ways from Burke county just about as far as it were possible to pet without taking to the clouds. It must be very near Burke's antipodal point on the earth's surface. I'nder these circum stances one is not surprised that Mr. l'earson declined the appointment. The life in Australasia would not suit a person raised inthemountains of North Carolina. Laughter as an Aid to Digestion. Nothing else will take the place of cheer and laughter at meals or any other time in the home. There is ,i vital eunnectiun between amiability and digestion between good cheer and assimilation. Laughter is the best fri'-nd the liver has, and depres sion, or melancholia its worst enemy. Numerous experiments have shown that mirth and cheerfulness stimu late thesecretiou'of th gastric juices, and are powerful aids to digestion. Yet, knowing this, many of us sit as gloomy and absorbed at the table as at a funeral; in many homes, scarcely a word is spoken at meals, outside of requests for an article of food. The meal hour ought to mean something besides supplying a mere animal function. The bell which calls the family to the table ought to be a signal for a good time generally, when all cares should be thrown off and everybody appear at his best. It ought to signalize the time for mirth and laughter. It ought to be looked frr.ranl to by the members of the family as the recrssor nooning is looked forward to by pupils in school, as a let-up from the strenuous life. $ Official Analysis of Henderson Water. o Laboratory Xo....4G3.
