THE HEXDEIISON GOLD LEAF THTJRSD AY, OCTOBEK 4, 1906. The Gold Leaf. I ESTABLISHED 1881. BY THAD R. MANNING. THURSDAY, OCT. 4, li)0C The tribute of the Industrial News of Greensboro paiJ to Mr. Bryan, who eulogized Dr. Mclver instead of making a political speech, was the most graceful and eloquent apprecia tion that appeared in any paper in theStateduriiig the pilgrimage of the Nebraskan through North Carolina; and it was creditable to both the head and heart of that paper. Thomasville Chnrityand Children. We had it in wind to say as much and Brother Johnson expresses our sentiments so well that we adopt his language as our own. If all scoundrels were sent to their reward as speedily as the bank wreck er Stensland, there would be less talk about the law's delay and the miscar riage of justice. Charlotte News. Has it occurred to you that there was a special object in "railroading" Stensland through to the peniten tiary as he was? lie had threatened to tell all he knew about the wreck ing of the bank. If JieMiad done so he would have implicated others.and he was not given a chance to talk. Hence the haste to convict him and send him up. See? W'uks a brute of a man confesses to a crime, what is the use of a coun ty having to go to the expense of a trial? AVhy not give him what he de serves and get through with bim? Durham Sun Docs our esteemed contemporary mean by this that it would abolish legal trials and resort to irregular methods of punishing criminals? pure ly not. The matter of expense is not to be considered.Lut in a great many cases where a conviction has been made further expense should not be incurred by appeal. But what do some lawyers care for expense (to others) and the miscarriage of justice when they can get a larger fee and a little notoriety out of the case? Here is where the root of the evil lies and we some times think that a judge should have the power to deny an appeal in cased like those of Hodges in Durham, and Bohannon in Ouil ford;just as he has to refuse to grant a new trial. -- - Means Industrial Development. Wilmington Mctineuger. The proposed increase of the cap ital stock of the Norfolk aud South ern railroad means more money for railway development in eastern North Carolina. That will mean in creased valuation of farming and trucking lands, the opening up of territory now kept back because of lack of" facilities for reaching the markets, the growth of the towns, the establishment of new industrial plants and the general development of that whole section of the state. The area embraced in that railway system is very large, extending as ft.r south as New Bern aud as far west as Raleigh. The development of the Norfolk and Southern railway system will be of wonderful advautage to that part of the state. - 4 A Boomerang. Charlotte NVvt. Senator Bailey of Texas is one of the ablest men in the South, or in America, for that matter. Recently he had a client who was a millionaire. It later developed that that client held heavy stocks in the Standard Oil company, and for that reason a lot of newspapers have been accusing the Senator of pandering to that big corporation. Senator Bailey has ns much right to appear for a mil lionaire who held stock in a corpora tion as a dentist has to pull the tooth of a murderer. In the litter case the simple act of pulling the tooth does not in the least implicate the dentist in the murder, and with equal reason, in the former case, the Senator is not implicated in the af fairs of the btaudard Oil. Of course the Senator is accustomed to having folks criticise him. That is one thing that has made him. In other words such unwonted and unfounded criti cism of any man merely boosts the would-be victim while it only lowers .the accuser. Wheu the Senator gets through with some of his pigmy critics there won t be enough left to distinguish them. A Judge's Decision on Tobacco. A Judge of the Carolina Courts, who is evidently a good judge of tobacco as well as law, wrote recently that he had been using: sun cured tobacco for forty years, but in all bis experience bad found none go good as Reynolds', which was first onered to the trado lour years ago. Trevious to that time chewer afterchew er of tobaccos made too sweet, took to bchnapps and other brands of flue-cured (which required and had less sweetening than any other class of tobacco pro duced), until there were ten times more pounds chewed of Schnapps and other brands of flue-cured tobaccos than the entire production of sun cured. Soon after its introduction, Reynolds' Sun Cured grew so big iu sales on quality that R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for the last two or three years has pur chased not less than one-half of the en tire amount of the farme-s' production of sun cured tobacco and tLeir purchases in the sections or territory where the best sun cured tobacco grows have stim ulated the farmers to increase the pro duction of sun cured tobacco. Reynolds' Sun Cured is not only pure sun cured tobacco, but it is choice selec tions made from sun cured tobacco grown where the best sun cured tobacco grows. A Young Mother at 70. "My mother has suddenly been made young at 70. Twenty years of intense, gof fering from dyspepsia had 'entirely disabled her, until six months ago, when she began taking Electric Bitters, which hare com pletely cured her and restored the etrength and activity she had in tiie prime of life," writes Mrs. W. L Gilpatrick, of Danforth, Me. Greatest restorative medicine on the globe. Sets Stomach, Liver and Kidneys tight, purifies the blood, and cures Malaria, Biliousness and Weakness. Tl.o Wocliinortnn Sroriol sunt nnr. as rioted last week, in toe interest of promoting Greater Commercial Washington, reached Henderson , Monday evening and stopped until 12 o clock 1 uesday. Those in charge were in fine spirits and enthusiastic over the success so far met with. They had done more than advestise acquaint the people where they had been with the merits and importance of Washington as a wholesale market they had taken orders for large quantities of goods, every line represented having made substantial increase in the number of customers turned their way. The different dis plays were handsomely arranged, and it presented a picture of "Wash ington on Wheels, giving a different impression of the business interests of the city than many persous bad before. Washington is little known in this part of the country as a business point, and the idea of presenting it in that light is a good one and will undoubtedly produce results. Many business men who had never thought of Washington as a place to buy will learn that houses there offer as good opportunity as those in Baltimore, New York and other points, and in this way Washington business men will find their trade enlarged and ex tended. As stated in the Gold Leaf last week the train was sent through Vir ginia and North Carolina, West Vir ginia and parj:s of Maryland to ad vertise the business of Washington and to induce merchants to trade with the wholesale dealers of the cap ital city. The train was sent out under the auspices of the Washing ton Star newspaper, the Washington Board of Trade, the Shippers' and Jobbers' Association and the Busi ness Men's Association. The gentle men accompanying it were very courteous and obliging and took great pleasure in showing visitors through the cars and answering all questions and giving any informa tion desired. The cars were visited by a number of our citizens and much interest was shown in the exhibits made. And not only in Henderson but in all the places the special has visited the peo ple and business men have manifest ed more than ordinary interest, mak iHg the tour a splendid financial suc cess. Mr. C. II. Gattis, traveling passen ger agent of the Seaboard Air Line, was with the train here accompany ing it as long as his road had it in charge. Paxton Co.,Boston, Mass. ..-. - "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." The death angel visited the home of Robt. A. Wat kins very unexpectedly Sept. 25, and claimed for its victim the sweet and gentle spirit of the wife and mother, tiaude Wat kins, the oldest daughter of Thomas and Sarah Lassitvr. She was born Sept. 13. 1882; died Sept. 25, 1000, being only 21 years of age. The death of this lovely young woman al most palsied. the hearts of friends and rela tives and once more came forth from many lips the oft repeated "Surely God's ways are mysterious." From a child she possessed a sweet and amiable disposition, and her gen tle hands were always ready to administer comfort to those around her. She professed faith iu Christ at an early age and joined the Christian church at Liberty, and remained a loyal and consistent member until her death. She loved the sacred work of helping others develop that which was good and noble in them, and many will rise up and call her blessed, because of her good advice and gen tle influence. She leaves a heart-broken bnsbaud, three darling little children, one a babe ef only a few hours, a loving father and mother, two sisters, two brothers and a host of friends to mourn their loss. It was indeed a heart-rending scene to see her taken from the dear loved ones and es pecially the dear little children who tailed the sweet word "Mama" with little aching hearts as the cold clay hid her mortal form forever from their sight, but God doeth all things well and we have only to bow in Christian submission to His will. Although the summons came quickly, for but a few hours preceding her death she was well aud cheerful, she met the end as one pre pared for death only regretting to leave the loved ones behind. Oh, how conld we wish her back again in thiscruel world where joys are mingled with sorrow, grief and pain. We know she cannot come to ua for none re turn from those quiet shores but we have the bright assurance of meeting her in that hap py Heavenly home. So let ns rejoice that she was not longer spared to encounter the cares and conflicts of this world and that al though her life here is ended she is now be ginning a life of eternal bliss in her Heavenly mansion, where with outstretched arms she awaits to welcome the loved ones who are left behind. ROYAL BAKINQ POWDER CO.. NEW YORK. Whipping Post Should be Revived. Wilmington Messenger. In the trial of a white man for horse stealing in Guilford superior court it de veloped that the defendant had beaten the horse cruelly. Judge Moore, in pronouncing sentence, declared himself iu favor of a whipping post for two of fenses cruelty to animals and beating a woman. lie said there was nothing worse than beating a dumb animal ex cept to beat a weak and dependent wo man. We agree with Judge Moore, but he does not go far enough. The whip ping post should be established for pun ishment of the class of criminals men tioned by him; but it should not be con fined to them. Other crimes should be included. The whipping post is badly needed in this state. Its re-establish men t would do more to suppress commission of the lower grades of felony than any thing that could be done, and it would save the state and counties an immense amount of money each year. Lexington Dispatch The sophomore class of the Acrri cultural and Mechanical College at Raleigh unanimously agrees that there will be no hazing in that msti tution this year, and their action is a good example for the students in other colleges to follow. Hazing is lawless, brutal and cowardly and is one of numerous "traditions" of the campus that ought to be lopped off next to the trunk. And it would be, summarily, if force, were used against force, for whenever a first 3Tear student talks to a gang of toughs over a shiny barrel, it is noticeable that no hazing occurs in that quarter.
