THE HENDERSON GOLD LEAF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 190G. Think More Spend Less. Why is it that the average man is worth bo mneh less ia money and property than we have a right to expect him to be? It isn't because he doesn't make the money, for the average man is industrious and has earned from ?10,CM)0 to f 30,000 in the past ten years. It U be cause he doesn't give much serious thought either to his income or out go. Serious thought would teach him the true value of a dollar; then he would spend carefully and save steadily. That system soon places any man ahead of his fellows. A bank uccount helps you to realize the value of money end aid in handling financial affairs. We invite your account and will help you to save. Miss Belle Bullock went to Georgia last week to take charge of a school nir Climax, where she has two brothers, Walter and George, living. Much building has been done in Henderson this 3'ear, and it still con tinues. Carpenters are in demand ami find steady employment here at good wages. The definition of a lady has been given as a woman who alwajrs re ineiiiberi others and never forgets herself. The same rule will apply ejuilly as well in defining a gentle men. When the Mail Order Houses final ly undermine the local merchants probably they will then realize that the failure to advertise and keep in touch with their customers had much to do with it. Raleigh Enterprise. )r. B. F. Dixou, State Auditor, spoke in the court house here Thurs day night to a small crowd. He is a good speaker, free from abuse and the tricks of the demogog, mid one jries away having a good opinion of tlio man nfter hearing him. Hx-Senator Marion Butler address- ed the Republicans of Vance county in the court house here Saturday. We did not hear the speech and can.-1 not speak from personal knowledge of ir. Some persons said it was dis appointing while others spoke of it as lirst class. i Mr. George T. Whitaker of Epsom, ; has accepted a position as a principal of a school at Oak Grove, Ga , and j left last week toenterupon hisduties. That is the question frequent ly asked about Barnum & Bailey's circus which will exhibit in Henderson Thursday, November l.". We know nothing to the contrary.but whether they do or not it will lie the biggest show ever seen in Henderson no doubt about that. When you pull down the towu in which is your home, you are pulling down yourself. Try and abandon the idea that all good things are in s line other locality. Giveyourtown all the praise it can legitimately bear. It certainly will do you no harm. Above all, patronize your institutions including your news paper and local job printing office. Mr. George T. Bullock and bride, (formerly Miss Beatrice McEachern of Red Springs.who have been visiting at Mr. Walter Bullock's in this coun ty since their recent marriage) left last week for Climax, Ga., where they will live in future. Mr. Bullock has leen connected with the State Expe riment farm near Red Sorinirs. but iroes to Georgia to take charge of a farm which he and his brother Walter have bought jointly. It pays to deal with the man who advertisesthe wide-awake business man who keeps up with the times and moves things so rapidly that he does not allow old stock to accumulate. Never trade with a man who does not advertise, if you want nice, fresh, clean goods at reasonable prices. Kind a man who does not advertise, nnd you will find a man who is as rusty and old-fashioned as the goods which he is trying to sell. Concord Tunes. That is the experience of most suc cessful business hrms and enterprises. The advertising appropriation is set down as a legitimate expense of the business and one which brings the greatest returns in proportion to the amount i n vested - due consideration being taken of the practical and sys tematic method of advertising, of course. An exchange says the wise mer chant will cease to advertise when trees grow upside down; when the beggar wears a crown: when ice forms on the sun; when the sparrow weighs a ton; when gold dollars get too cheap; when women, secrets keep; when a fish forgets to swim; when Satan sings a hymn; when girls go baek on gum; when the small boy hates a drum; when no politician schemes; when mince pie makes pleas ant dreams; when it's fun to break a toot h; when all lawyers tell the truth, when cold water makes you aruriK; when you love to smell a skunk; when the drummer has no brass; when these things all come to pass, then the man that's wise will neglect to advertise. "A Pointer for Banks." Wall Street Summary. Discussing editorially a banking advertisement from a Southern city which, in addition to the merits of the bank in question, broadly called attention to the advantages of the city, the Manufacturers' Record of Baltimore says: "Here is a pointer for all banks every where. While there have been demon strations in number that a bank can di rectly build its business by advertising, just as surely as a drug store or a dry goods bouse may, yet there is in this ad vertisement a recognition of the broader principle that by building up the entire community a work will be done of great potential advantage to the bank Itself, while at the same time the entire com munity will be benefited and the pros perity of the bank will not be gained at the expense of other institutions of the kind. This is in truth sane comment. In ndtrprt.iainrr n crmxY i rt n. nntnmnmfT the best channel through which to work is tne local bank. It s the clearing-house, in fact, for the credit and standing of its community; and only good to the outside public and to themselves can result from the adoption, of our contemporary's ad vice by banks situated in rural and outlying localities. It is a well knowm medical fact that pine reein is most effective in the tratment of dis eases of the bladder and kidneys. Possession given Jan. 1st. 1907. Mr. Craig's Speech Monday Night Hon. Locke Craig of Asheville, filled his appointment to speak here Mon day night. He had an average size crowd for a night meeting and made a good speech in behalf of Democratic policies and principles. Mr. Craig is a forceful and pleasing speaker and some of his figures of speech had the ring of true oratory. He was elo quent at times as well as earnest. Mr. Craig discussed the tariff ques tion somewhat at length and coming down to State issues he flung defi ance at the Republicans in their as saults upon the Democratic adminis tration. In answer to their charges of extravagance he showed that the money had been wisely and well spent for public education, the care for the unfortunate insane, pensions for old soldiers, etc., and declared that the Democrats had no apologies to make therefor. If you have a sewing machine that is badly crippled you had better have W. H. Griffith at Manning House attend to it. He has a sewing machine hospital. Telephone No. 55. Anti-trash Ordinance Needed. Main Btreet is a disgrace "to the town; its disreputable condition as to litter and trash, we mean. OnSunday mornings is this especially true after the traffic and trade on Saturday. There ought to be an ordinance against throwing trash of any kind ou the street. But before this is done receptacles must be provided for the purpose. The anti-spitting or diance is all right and. fairly well ob served, and to this an anti-street lit tering ordinance should be added. It is a shame to permit Main street, naturally beautiful and easily kept clean, to be made unsightly and dis creditable to the town in this way. The more attractive we make Hen derson the better will be its effect upon strangers and persons coming Here with an eye to eititer in vest their money or to make their ""homes among us. A cold taken at this time of theyear is gen erally hard to get rid of but it will not be able to withstand Bee's Laxative Honey and Tar. Make Your Home Attractive . Albemarle Enterprise." "Make your home an attractive place for your children," said Dr. McLendon at the Farmers Institute Monday. We would like to sound tbse words in every community in the county. Along with the improve ment of the farm must go that high er and vastly more important work of the cultivation of the minds of the chil dren reared on the farm. Attractive surroundings in the way of flower beds and well kept lawns will aid wonder fully in this respect. See to it, also, that your children receive the best education possible, even though it be their purpose to remain on the farm The farm needs now more than ever before the trained mind and the skilled hand. Officially correcting rumors to. the contrary annoucement was made in these columns last week that the big Barnum & Bailey Show will positive ly exhibit in Henderson on Thursday, Nar. 15th. Supplemental to this we are in receipt of a letter, from Mr. Lewis E. Looke, (Jeneral Agent of the great show, to the same effect. The first regular advertising car of this world's famous show will arrive in the course of a few days to make canvas of the territory in this vicinity and herald the coming of the great show with its multiplicity of tnnuing features, many of which are of sensational character and have never been seen with any other circus; in fact, nearly every attraction pre sented by the Barnum & Bailey Show is of such high artistic merit and value they are prohibitive with any other amusement enterprise. But a more extended official announcement of these rare features will be made in the columns of this paper when the regular press agent arrives on . the scene. Court adjourned for the term Sat urday afternoon, This was Judge Cooke's first court in Vance county. It as not his regular appointment, how ever, be and Judge Long having ex changed courts at the request of the lat ter, lie made a fine impression and his mends were greatly pleased at the record established; or rather we should say sustained, for Judge Cooke had estab lished a good record elsewhere through out the State where he has been. Judge Cooke was in the home of his friends in Henderson. Our people re member most appreciatively his good offices in helping to establish Vance county. He was in the Legislature at the time speaker of the House and in their efforts to get the new county our people found in him indeed a "friend at court." Upon the adjournment of court Sat urday members of the bar expressed their appreciation and admiration of Judge Cooke's conduct upon the bench and thanked him for his uniform courtesy and consideration. Feeling remarks were made by several of the lawyers and their sentiments were endorsed by others present although they did not give voice to them. . How's This.
