Thomp son had caught in a steel trap and was exhibiting at his store. From the description given Mrs. Thomas M. Pittman readily identified and classified the species. In a note to the editor she says: "Your 'strange bird' is most likely the Rarn Owl or Monkey-faced Owl. If so its length is 18 inches; no ear-tufts; eyes black. Color gray and yellowish below; white more or less washed with yel low and spotted withjblack. Range United States as far North as Minne sota, Oregon and Long Island; em igrates South as far as Mexico. His fcientific name is Strix Pratincola. A "sizing up" of the bird with the description given left no doubt as to He corresponded per fectly with the picture so minutely drawn. Mrs. Pittman is especially fond of the study of birds and she know more natural history as applied to our feathered friends than any other person hereabouts perhaps. She not only knows each bird by sight but can distinguish them by their voice as well. He went to hia room about six o'clock and that was the last time he was seen alire. When an attendant went to look after him some time later he was found dead. Death had apparently come with out a struggle, heart failure induced by his weakened and enfeebled con dition being assigned as the cause. Maj. Taylor had been a great suf ferer for many years as a result of an injury to one of his legs. He had been operated on several times and about two years ago it was found necessary to amputate it the limb being taken off at the knee. For a man of his advanced years he seemed to recover from the operation re markably well and was not only saved much suffering but his days were no doubt lengthened in conse quence. But of late his health had been failing rapidly. Since he came back some weeks ago from a visit to his daughters he had not been able to be out but little and the sudden and painful news of his death was the first intimation that many of his friends had of his preseuce here. Maj. Taylor was a gentleman of the old school, full of good humor, fond of his friends, and was very popular. Appreciating a joke and tellingone with rare zest, possessing a rich-fund anecdote and reimiuiscence he was the life of any company and will be greatly missed by those who were privileged to enjoy his com panionship.. The funeral was held from the res idence at 1 o'clock Tuesday, Rev. Julian E. Ingle conducting the ser vice, and the body was taken to Orange, Va., for interment nt the old family home place. The active pall-bearers were: J. B. Owen, L. W. Barnes, S. P. Cooper, 11. J. Corbitt, W. M. Henderson, Maj. P. T. Jones, F. C. Toepleman, Col. AV. E. Gary. Honorary: I). Y. Cooper, A. C. The Wilmington (Delaware) Morn ing News of May 4th, says this of Howe's Moving Picture show which will play a return date in Henderson with an entire change of program introducing new subjects Monday, Juue 3rd: Howe's Moving Pictures were the at traction at the Opera House last night and as usual an excellent exhibition was given. Of all of the moving pic ture shows which come to Wilmington Howe's is the favorite. Last night a number of excellent subjects were shown including atrip through Ireland, the catching of whales and some miscellan eous subjects. The pictures are clear and distinct, and there is an absence of the annoying flicker, which is usually found in such entertainments. Those who en iov a first-class entertainment of moving pictures, will find this show to be the one which they are looking for. Not only are the pictures good, but the sound effects are excellent and add greatly to the enjoyment ol the entertainment. o ID in m. M WELDON, N. C. Hundreds of old people right here in Henderson need just 6uch a strength maker and body-builder as our delicious cod liver preparation, Vinol; and we simply cannot understand why they will continue to; drag out a half-dead and half-alive existence, when we guarantee Vinol will invigorate every organ in the body, stop the natural decline, and make them well, vigorous and strong. If you want to know how an aged, feeble, discouraged man or woman may be made active, cheerful and vigorous, read this letter: Mrs. Catherine Therer, of Albany, N. Y., writes: "Six months ago I felt that I was broken down by age, and I was doomed to the weak land feeble condi tion of old people. The slightest exer tion tired me, and I had no strength. My daughter brought me a bottle of Vinol. 1 soon felt an inprovement; I continued its use, and am now well, cheerful, and stronger than I have been for yeara; in fact, I feel ten years younger." Vinol is not a stimulant which reacts on the evstem, but it is a genuine cod liver and iron tonic which in a natural man ner makes rich red blood and replaces weakness with strength. We wish every old person in Henderson would try Vinol on our offer to return money ii it fails. W. W. Parker, Druggist. Note While we are sole agents for Vinol in Henderson, it is now for sale at the leading drug store in nearly every town and city in the country. Look for the Vinol agency in your town. E. 17.
