The Statesville landmark states that in the faturejio will make a charge for all cards of thanks, reso lutions of respect, obituaries, etc. This ia right-and proper and uii Lews papers should adopt the same rule, especially since everything in the newspaper line has increased in price. The Dispatch, long ago adopted thi plan and is mildly surprised at the esteemed Landmark for not having done so before now. There is no rea son at all why a newspaper should give space to matters of the kind noted. Few people outside the imme diate family of a deceased person find interest in an obituary, and as for cards of thanks there is nothing whatever to them. Lexington Dis patch. The Landmark is surprised itself that it has endured these things so long. Only one thing deterred it. It is hard to refuse to print an obituary for friends and patrons of the paper, and if we could always regulate the length of the obituary and the sub ject matter so as to elimnate the things we thought improper, we would not charge for these. Butyou can't discriminate, and as a rule the longest and most fulsome obituaries are written about people who least deserve them. We some time ago adopted a rule to charge lodges for tributes of respect. They are all the same and there is no news in them, aud when a man who belonged to a half dozen lodges passed away the giving of a half column or so of space to "tributes of respect" which mean nothing and are the same in all cases, became intolerable. Besides, 4 all lodsres do businees on a monev basis. ' Tbey have a fund to meet ex penses and pay for other things, and there is no reason why a newspaper should print their resolutions for nothing. Receiving pay for the tributes and resolutions of the lodges, we might have undertaken to manage the obit uaries, but"5andor compels us to say that we adopted the rule to shut out the cards of thanks in case of death. In some way this custom got started and many people who didn't want to write cards did so because it was the custom. The custom is abominable taste and the 'Landmark wants to stop it. Cards of thanks are proper on some occasions but not in case of funerals. Statesville Landmark. Henderson Lyceum Association. Encouraged by last season's suc cess the Henderson Lyceum Associa tion maintains its organization and announces a series of attractions that are superior to anything here tofore presented. When we say "suc cess we do not mean from a pecuni ary point of view, because actual ex- Eenses were not quite me"t last season, ut the pleasure and profit derived from bringing such attractions here attractions which could not have been secured otherwise than through the Lvceum was compensation enough for those who assumed the responsi bility of the undertaking, bull, with such high class attractions as are announced for this season the Lyceum Association ought to have a. mem bership that will place it beyond the possibility of failure to meet expenses at least. The required number of tickets have not been sold yet but the gentlemen who are standing sponsor for it have deciueu to go ahead and put on the course, which is as follows: - Wednesday, October 1, Victor's Royal Venetian Band. - Nov. 11, Jbred Kmerson urooks, humorist and, poet. December 27, Durno, the king of magic, and Herman the prince of vio linists. January 16, Lyceum Grand Con cert Company. February 5, De Jvoven Quartette. This is an exceptionally fine list of attractions a bigger and better course than was put on by the Lyce um Association last season. The De Koven Quartette are well aud fa vorably remembered as having been here last season. They gave such universal satisfaction that it was de cided to include them iu this season's offerings. The Lvceum Association has gone to a great deal of expense and trouble to put on the course and our people . . f A ought to snow proper appreciation and support. Loss of $10.00 a Bale Would Mean an Enormous Falling Off to the Business Interests of North Caro- : Una Alone. Mr. 0. C. Moore, president of the North Carolina Division of the South ern Cotton Association, who was in Atlanta last week to attend a meet ing of the Executive Committee held on theJtth; in a short letter to the Gold EOf says: One would suppose that the price oi cotton-would be advancing instead of declining, considering the fact that all manufactured cotton goods are advanc ing in price. Hitb the hope of stopping toe market ing of cotton on declining prices, I have called for a Cotton Convention Oetober 16th. at 8 p. m., in House of Representa tives, Raleigh, N. C. lbope every man in ance county af fected by the price of cotton will attend the convention. The sale of the North Carolina crop at $10.00 per bale less than commercial value means a loss of $00,000,000 to the business interests of our State. Are the business men content to suffer ench a loss? Yours truly, C. C. MOORE, Pres. N. C. Division S. C. A. John Griffith as "King Richard." Of John Griffith, the tragedian, by any leading-critics regarded ns the best living interpreter' of Shake speare s strenuous characters, who will appear here on October 31st at the Grand Theat in an important revival of "King Richard," aided by a company and equipment that will fill all the demands of an intellectual audience, one who knows him has said this: Mr. Griffith's success in other Shakespearean roles has been considerable. He starred for three years exclusively in "Macbeth-." No actor ever made a like record. This season his offering is Shakespeare's sublime tragedy "King Richard the Third." He fairly revels in this characer, playing it with the greatest animation and effect, fairly compell ing his audience to bursts of enthusi asm, l here is no other livmsr actor who in his peer in the physical and mental qualities befitting this most arduous and animated role. His personality reminds one of the speer iess Edwin Forrest and the elder Salvini. He has lungs, intelligence and discretion. W ith these, and his xcellent supporting company: he gets unusual and sensational rfsults. satisfying the lovers of strenuosity, urain and Drawn. Mr. Griffith is supported bv a capable company, and his equip ment covers all the requirements that are needful for a thoroughly first-class attraction.
