Robert Lovwnan in L'ncle linu's Mnsrazinn for November. The Iwggar and tb king Sleep Hoftly ni.e by iie, Death onto each doth bring A grave thus deep, thnu wide. The pennant and the peer Are of a kindred clay, Kent in k in silence here. After life'u little day. About Kissing Mother. A father talking to hi careless daughter, said: "I want to 8ppak to you of your mother. It may be that you have no ticed a careworn look upon her face. Of course it has not been brought there by any act of yours, still it is your duty to chase it away. "I want you to get up to-morrow morning and get breakfast. When your mother comes and begins to express her surprise go right up to her and kiss her on the mouth. You can't imagine how it will brighten her dear face. IJesidpjs you owe her a kiss or two. "A long while ago when you were a little girl she kissed you. You were not ns attractive then as you ire now. "Through years of childish sunshine and shadows she was always ready to cure, by the magic of a mother's kiss, the little dirty, chubby hands whenever they were injured with those first skirmishes with the round old world.'' . , No More Open Switches. 8. W. Clark, now employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railway at Wel don, has invented a device for rail road switches which hejclaims will les sen the wrecks due to open switches and decrease the loss of life attributed to this cause. Patents for this in ventionarenow pending in Waaliing ton. With the new invention an em ploye whose duty it is to let trains in and out of the sidings by means of the switch will be obliged to put his foot in a socket arrangement and also will be obliged to hold a lever back until the entire train passes through. When the lever is pulled a bell is rung some distance down the track, and also the danger signal, a red light, looms up as long as the switch is open. There is also an interlock ing system which works with the movements of the switch, throwing up an attachment in the track, and also a device which hangs from the center of the tender. In case the en gineer should take no warning of the danger signal, this device would stop him by cutting the couplings and stopping his train in fifty .yards. The New Pure Food and Drug Law. "We are pleased to announce that Foley's Honey and Tur for rough. eoldn and lung troubles in not affected by the National I'ure Food and Drug law ub it contaiuH no ophites or other harmful drugs, und we recommend it as a safe remedy for children and adults, Sold at Parker's Two Drug Stort H. The Futurs of the Airship. "It may be trite, but it is none the less true," says William A. Ualdwin, the celebrated aeronaut, in Recrea tion for November, "to say of the airship as we have so often said of the bicycle and the automobile, 'it has come to stay.' " What has been done in the United States in the last year alone is enough to convince me that practical navigation of the air has arrived. "Some idea of how important a po sition aeronaut ics occupy in the world today may be gained by following the press of the world Hardly a day passes that docs not record a flight in some part of the world, gov ernment experiments to perfect the airship for purposes of war, the or ganization and practical exposition of clubs of amateur aeronauts of the feasibility of this subject for sport, and so on indefinitely. Walter Well man's ill-timed and consequently un successful attempt to accomplish the long-sought discovery of the North Pole through the medium of an air ship is but another evidence of the importance of the subject. His air ship worked splendidly,' but gal sand driving snow storms rendered the ex pedition impossible. The Sunday papers of this country, as well as our magazines and the papers of all Europe are filled withaccouutsof the progress already attained or that may reasonably be anticipated. What effect the use of the airship as an engine of destruction will have on modern warfare is already made the subject of international discussion. The Hague Conference, made up of profound scholars and leading states men from nearly all civilized nations, has taken up the question of warfare in space, and alive to its illimitable possibilities, has drafted rules gov erning the uses to which military bal loons, aeroplanes and like naviga tors of the air shall be put, as fol lows: That only dirigible balloons, monned by trained military aero nauts, be used, and that the drop ping of explosives from the skies onto defenseless cities and the discharge of death-dealing gases, except over ports, and military camps be pro- tiiuueo. Dancing Proves Fatal. Many men and women catch colds at dances which terminate in pneumonia and consumption. Alter exposure, if Foley's Honey and Tar is taken it will break up a cold anil no serious results need be feared. Refuse any hut the genuine in a yellow puck age. Sold at Parker's Two Drug Stores. There is no better place to show one's breeding than ridinsr in a rail road train in the late fall. Some pas sengers are thoughtful of all those about them, while others open their windows, with no regard whatever for the discomfort of those behind them. It is a great thing to be a gentleman, especially on a crowded train. Thomasville" Charity and Children. When the Stomach, Heart or Kidney uerves get weak, then these organs always fail. Your health is surely worth this simple test. Thomas Bring the Roses Back to Your Sweetheart's Cheek. The following appeared recently in the Progressive Farmer over the signature of some gentleman in Ire dell county, who, evidently, has taken ;t sensible view of things: "Strange to say, but 1999 years ago the most exquisite punishment and excruciating pain which could be studied out by the minds of men and inflicted on their prisoners was to bare their heads and cause water to drip on them, one drop at a time. Not fast, mind you, bnf i" drip drip drip drip incessant ;y. i :Vitld night until it became the mosc in tense torture imaginable. Yes, it amounted to what modern people call the "impossible." Twasu't so but for awhile at the start, but ic in variably wound up in insanity of the most raging, raving type. "Now history is repeating itself and great hordes of us old mossy backed farmers with scales over our eyes as thick as walnut hulls are sub jecting our wives to a similar torture to that employed by our benighted grand-daddies io punishing their prisoners. "They cook the breakfast New Year's morning. They wash the dishes and tidy up the house. They cook the supper, wash the dishes and tidy up the house. Next day the same, next the same. Three times a day three hundred and sixty five days a year, the old monotonous routine of drip drip drip drip. Is it any wonder that the insane asylum shows such a preponderating per cent, of farmers' wives among their inmates? Shouldn't we be ashamed of our miserable, thoughtless selves? We get change. Our work is varied. We get a day off now then and rest Sunday, but those faithful, tireless, uncomplaining wives of ours go from year to year without a day's surcease from care and worry." Agriculture and Jamestown. William II. Stone in Southern Farm Maga zine of Baltimore for November. The leading exhibit feature of the Jamestown Exposition is the magnifi cent display of agricultural, hor ticultural and other products and re sources as shown in the States Ex hibit Palace. Here, as in the other i in portant features of the Exposition , the Southern States predominate, and the showing made is thoroughly characteristic and representative of the products of Southern farms. In nearly every case the exhibits ofeach State have been made under the direct supervision of theState depart ments of agriculture, which, being thoroughly familiar with their re sources, have collected and arranged their respective displays in a manner that is fully exhaustive; in fact, so systematically and comprehensively have these exhibits been exploited that visitors can readily ascertain the leading agricultural and horticul tural products of each State and the possibilities and opportunities which are available either for investment or settlement. And then, too, there ire competent men in charge from the various departments of agricul ture who are mlly posted as to tneir resources and can answer in telligently and convincingly all qustions of those interested. -- it There are no agricultural or horti cultural exhibits made here by the States of Florida, Al-tbama, Missis sippi, Tennessee and lexas, and these would not nave been represented in any way had not the ra ilroads which pass through them included these re sources in their own exhibits, and with the exception of Texas these have been brought out in a limited but generally representative way. Farm products form a leading fea ture of the railroad exhibits, and from Maryland to Florida and Louis iana are shown the wonderful agri cultural possibilities which abound along their several lines, and these are strongly reinforced by the charac ter of specimens on exhibition. The exhibits of the several States and railroads' along the lines of agricul ture and horticulture are doing a most excellent work for the South and are better acquainting not only its own people with their wonderful resources, but ulso the many visitors from the North and West, whose eyes are being opened to the splendid ad vantages possible in all sections of the South, where the labor given to t lie cultivation of the farms is re warded by bountiful harvests, insur ing good living and competence. Judging from the inquiries being re ceived at the exhibits there is every reason for the South to look for many broad and beneficial results from its showiug made at the James town Exposition. Love the Flag! Honor the Flag! .foe Mitchell Chappie in "Affairs at Washing ton;" in National Magazine for October. A most touching incident recently occurred at a graduat ion exercise in New York City; the little daughter of a foreigner, in passing, caught the edge of an American flag held by a school comrade, and, believing herself unobserved, gently raised it to her lips. This incident has awakened more editorial comment throughout the country than the most eloquent Fourth of July oration delivered this season ;it shows very clearly how need less is the alarm of those who are so solicitious about the patriotism of thousands of our new citizens crowd ing to these shores. In fact, in the breastu of most of these adopted citi zens lies latent a patriotism such as was expressed in!our revolutionar v fa thers, but which, in the swiftly-mov ing generations that have succeeded has faded to almost a shadow of its former self. That little girl manifested her deep love for the emblem, the meaning of winch had no doubt been taught bv her parents; and when she paused to kiss the Stars and Stripes she simply showed that she had the courage to express a filing which an American child is too apt to be backward in showing. Love the flag! Honor the flag! We can learn a lesson from the little alien child who was so eager to greet the emblem of democracy and lreeuom. He Fought at Gettysburg. David Parker, of Fayette, X. Closing Days of the Big Show Will be Made Memorable Special Events to be Celebrated From Now On, Ending in a Glorious Week of Carnival. Jamestown Exposition, Va., Nov. 9th, 1907. The closing days of James-town Ex position are to be made memorable by a gigantic outpouring of the citi zens of Virginia and North Carolina. Already a number of towns and counties in both States have arranged to observe special days at the Expo sition, and others aredweuasing plans to celebrate. Governor Glenn, four times a participant in exercises at the Exposition, will again be the great fisrure of the occasion on Raleigh Day. Soon the great battleship fleet of 1G warships, which is to make its way to the Paciftic coast will assem ble at Hampton Roads, and remain there until after the Exposition is over. The Exposition is to close with a week of Carnival and a great show of Chrysanthemums and other flowers. Virginia will celebrate Eastern Shore Day aud Princess Anne County Day on November 15th. Smithfield and Nanseraoiid, Southampton and Isle of Wight counties will observe November 18th. Portsmouth Day is also leing arranged, but no date has yet been assigned. Albemarle county Day, November 15, is to be a great da v for North Car olina at the Exposition. Charlotte will observe November 19. Italeijh Day had originally be'en se' for No vember 2(lth. The convenience of Governor Glenn may cause a change in this date. Evacuation Day, November 25, is to lie made the occasion of patriotic exercises conducted by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Association. The United Daughters of the Confederacy assemble in National Convention on November 13 and remain in session until November 10. - Governor Glenn expects and is anx ious to take part in the celebration of Raleigh Day. Raleigh Day was originally set for November 26. - An engagement to speak in Western North Carolina on November 25, causes doubt in the mind of the chief magistrate of his ability to be at the Exposition on the following day. He is therefore anxious for posponement. Governor Glenn suggests November 30 a fitting opportunity to honor the memory of Sir Walter Raleigh and in which the city of Raleigh should signally participate. The City of Raleigh has shown grea t interest in the coming event. Mayor James I, Johnson, .will either be present or represented by high offi cials of the city. The Chamber of Com merce has put itself behind the move ment and is arranging fi program. Col Charles E. Johnson, a prominent banker, president of the Chamber, is one of the greatest promoters of the day. The Chamber of Commerce has se lected a distinguished Raleigh law yer, S. F. Smith, as its orator. Charlotte,- N. C, is to celebrate a day at Jamestown Exposition, prob ably November 19. Mayor Franklin, to whom this date has been suggest ed, will present the matter to the city council of Charlotte, tonight, when a decision will be made, lhe Greater Charlotte Club, the business organization of the city, which is promoting the expansion of munici pality, is displaying much interest in the occasion, ana expects to pro cure by this means, much valuable advertising calculated to serve the interest of Charlotte. Stroug sentiment pevails through out North Carolina for the continu ance of the Jamestown Exposition next year. Governor Glenn is one who highly approves of another sea son for the great show. In discussing the proposed continu ance of the Exposition Gov. Glenn expressed the sentiment that it is so beautiful m its completed condition that every person who sees it now is delighted, and its continuance would give many others an opportunity to see and enjoy it next year. "1 am deeply interested in the Ex position," savs Gov. Glenn, "and re gard it as the most beautiful exposi tion, in many respects, that the country has ever had. And aside from its other attractions the great historical feature it represents makes it the most Interesting of all exposi tions." North Carolina has all along mani fested deep interest in the Exposition. A great proposition oi attendance at the show has been from natives of that State. That interest continues. In general discussion of the situa tion with city and town officials and prominent business men, the desire that the show should remain over another season is not only general but it is postively expressed. That so magnificent an Exposition, which has had so short a life since actual completion, should be allowed to end now, when it could give so many mil lions who have not seen it, the delight that they would seek, seems deplora ble, according to North Carolina sentiment.
