"Above the Clouds." Good Play Admirably Pre sented Tuesday Night One of the Best Performances Given Here by Professional or Local Talent. The celebrated drama. "Above the Clouds," as presented at the Grand Theatre Tuesday night by local talent was one of the best performances t hat hasjbeen given herein a season. We do not draw any distinction betwwn professionals or amateurs. The play Tuesday night was well cast, the players being admirably suited to their respective parts; and upon the whole it was a finished and creditable performanrre, enjoyable in the highest degree to the large and apprecia tive audience present. Each one played his or her part well and where all did so admirably we cannot particularize even if indi vidual praise may be deserved. If one appeared to better advantage than another it was perhaps due to the fact that he or she had the more pleasing part and not that the character assumed was more faith fully portrayed. Following was the cast of charac ters: Philip Itingold, (Crazy Phil.) Mr. P. T. Jones. Alfred Thorpe (a city Nabob) Dr. 15 (i. Allen Amos Oaylord (a country gentleman) Mr. 8. P. Cooper. Howard (Jnylord (his sou) Mr. J. A. Moore. Titus Tuttle (a Gourmand) Dr. J. II. Tucker. Cent is Chipiiinn (Chip in the Hough) Mr.. Brooks Parham. Nat Nuylor (Thorpe's Protege) Mr. S. T. Peace. Grace Ingalls (ayoung artist) Mm. S. P. Cooper. Hester Thorne (Gaylord's Housekeeper) Mrs. J. H. Bridgers. Susy Gaylord (Gaylord's Daughter) Miss Genevieve Cooper. Lucietia Gerrish (so romantic) Miss Edua O'Neil. The Merry Widow Song as rendered by Miss Mortie Elmore with Mr. J. A. Moore and Mrs. S. P. Cooner. Mr. Brooks Parham and Miss Ailene Lewis dointf a waltzing act with ap propriate costumes, was one of the most pleasing features of the enter tainment, and they had to respond to several encores. Taken all together it was one of the best performances that has been presented here in a long time pro fessional or amateur. The entertainment was given under the auspicies of the Kind's Daughters, whose "obiect is to raise funds for charitable purposes, and is gratify ing to know that their efforts were crowned with success, artistically and financially. Resolutions of Respect. The sudden death of our venerable and beloved fellow member, Bennett Perry Alston, was a great shock to us, though his physical condition for some time past had made us feel that the end was ap proaching. He was one to whom the following Beatitudes were peculiarly applicable: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. islessed are the pure in heart, for thev shall see God. For whom have we known who was more merciful or more charitable, whom purer in heart? v hue we mourn his loss, and are un able to understand the necessity there for, we bow in humble submission to the will of an inscrutable Providence. We desire to show our appreciation of his life and work in the following reso lutions: Resolved, I. That in the death of Dr. Alston, the Vance County Medical Society has lost its oldest, most enthusiastic, aud bst beloved member, and each mem ber thereof a true and trusty friend. Hesolved. 11. 1 hat the community in which he lived has lost an honorable and upright citizen and a great and good physician. Resolved, III. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family. Resolved, IV. That a copy be inscribed on a page of our minutes, set aside for that purpose, and that a copy be sent to the Gold Leaf for publication. It. J. GILL, F. It. HARRIS, A. S. AFTER THE GRIPPE "Vinol Restored This Man's Strength "Several years ago I was attacked by a severe case of grippe, which left me with a hacking cough, soreness in my chest, and bronchitis. I took nearly every kind of cough syrup sold on the market, besides medicine given me by physicians. I received no permanent relief until my druggist asked me to try Vinol, and after taking three bottles I was entirely cured. I believe Vinol to be the greatest blessing ever offered to the public, as it does what is claimed for it." R. B. R. Hicks. Maplesville, Ala. The reason Vinol cures chronic coughs, colds and pulmonary troubles is because it contains tonic Iron and all the healing and body building ele ments of cod liver oil but no oib Vinol is also unexcelled as a strength builder for old people, delicate children, weak and run-down persons, and after sickness. W. W.Parker, Druggist AT AND BELOW COST. We are goinp to sell onr entire line of Books, Stationary. Dolls. Toys. Pictures. China and Novelties. AT AND BELOW COST FOR CASH. Craig who was out with his automobile Sunday, had a nar row escape from serious accident and probably death for one or more of the occupants. Accompanied by Mr. Will Mangum and Mr. C. P. Wil liams he was riding out on the Warrenton road several miles from llendersou, and going down a long hill the machine got beyond his con trol in approaching a bridge across a stream or ravine. The result was an accident that came near proving a serious affair for all concerned. The machine struck the side of the bridge, ran off and overturned, fall ing into the ravine below, a distance of several feet, but no one was serious ly hurt. Beyond a few slight bruises, and a severe shakeup and scare to the three occupants they escaped none tha worse for their thrilling experience. Strange to 6ay the machine was not very badly damaged either. It is a light affair a Ford runabout and was pulled out and brought home, a little disfigured but with slight repairs it will be in the ring again as good as ever. But friend Craig says when he goes down hill again where any creeks or ravines abound and bridges are to be crossed he will be very slow here after or get out and walk. Accidental Killing. Sad Tragedy Enacted Thanks giving Day Young Hilman Barnes Accidently Shot and Dies from Result of His In juries. A sad tragedy wasenacted Thanks giving day a few miles from town, when young Hilman Barnes lost his life as the result of an accident. Thursday morning Mr. R. E. Shot well aud Mr. Alwin Barnes, two young men of Henderson, planned a trip to the country to enjoy a day's shoot ing. They went to the home of Mr. Joshua T. Thejr hunted until some time between 3 and 4 o'clock when it was decided to quit and return to the house. On the way back when they reached the road, tired and weary from tramping over field and stubble, the young men sat down to rest. It was suggested that they try their hand at shooting at objects thrown into the air. Mr. Hilman Barnes who was on the opposite side of the road from Messrs. Shotwtdl and Al win Barnes, threw a couple of shells into the air and Mr. Shotwell fired at them. Mr. Alwin Barnes was then asked to try his skill. lie was sit ting down with his feet in the ditch or drain of the road side. As Hilman was in the act of throwing the object, up Alwin. with gun cocked, stepped backward and his foot striking the raised portion or ditch side of the road he stumbled and his finger pull ing on the trigger caused the gun to fire the load taking effect in the left shoulder of Hilman inflicting a mor tal wound.
