How the Devil Went to Camp
, meeting.
Let not those who read those
lines be shocked; it was not his
. Santanic Majesty, but The Dem
ocrat devil; and he is warranted
to be like Mrs. McStinger when
in a good temper, 4 'as meek and
mild as any house lamb."
-He has been working pretty
' hard, and setting any amount of
campaign literature; and, as this-
I is calculated to have a bad effect
7 on even the strongest mind, he
. thought himself; ''Now, I will
f array myself in glad raiment and
- will invest of my hard-earned
cash in hack hire, and will get
; me down unto Ball's Creek camp
t ground forthwith." And even
so he did. But it came to pass
that in that same hack were
divers light-minded persons of
both sexes, and there was much
giddy jesting, and, in some
strange way the hat of this said
devil did disappear. Wherefore
when the camp-ground was
reached, no trace of the said hat
eould be found, though the devil
sought it carefullv. Now of
j these matters nothing would
have come to light, had it not
been for the foreman who has an
eye to matters in che said Demo
t crat office. But, when he reach
- ed Jthe. camp-ground, having a
3 desire to be sure that all was
? well with the said devil, he
1 searched about to find him in the
* great crowd—and, when he did
t find him, 10, there he saw this
c misguided devil walking to an3
1 fro in the midst of the throng,
between two well-favored younj
1 damsels; and upon his head there
7 was no covering of any sorl
s whatever. Whereupon the saic
■\ foreman was deeply schocked,
i and said within himself; "these
i things ought not to be so, anc
P to the end that this devil maj
