L " I The Legislature of 1897. 0 A correspondent requests us 0 to print what the Caucasian said r of the Legislature of 18)7, the 1 last one controlled by the Repub -1 licans. It said much but here is s one contract that compasses in short space what it said: •j "Up to this date the Legisla . j ture is a damnable disgrace to j the State. -j "As to the Legislature of 1897, j the one now in session, we have :to say as a fact that it has won . the contempt of the people gen erally of all parties and we have to say as ah opinion that we do not believe that it can overcome that contempt in two years' time and hence can not get the ap proval of the people." "About ten more days remain of the legislative session. Un less there shall be, within this time, an almost miraculous change, the record'of the Legis | Jp.ture will be nothing, absolute ly nothing. All it will have done when it resigns will be the spending of $60,000 or $700,0C0 of the public funds for which , nothing will be returned." Do we want' another Legisla ture like that? —or worse? If •o, vote the Republican ticket this year for their candidates for 3 the Legislature are more unfit j than the men who composed the a majority of the Legislature of . 1897. Then there were some , honest Populists who did pre , vent some wrongs and protest against the grossest crimes. Bu f . now the whole gang is under the j control of the Federal office gang and the speculators in South Da kota and Special Tax Bonds, and j their Legislature would be near er like Littlefield's "hands" than the Legislature of 1897 , which the Caucasian truly said was ''a damnable disgrace to the State."
