Next week the Repulieans will be trying to explain how it hap pened to happen the way it hap pened. The Republicans say that they do not wont "an unwieldy ma jority in the next House. "XiiVJ vviUviitlj uwv « l'wt *»■ coming and are hoping for a soft place to fall on in November. Don't forget that no matter how good a Democrat you may be, your vote won't count unless it is in the ballot-box. See to it that you come out on election day and vote and work for the good cause. The Democrats have not been extravagant, but if they had. Democratic rule is worth so much more than the confusion and strife that comes with Re publicanism that the latter would be expensive at any price. $■ ■ . The Last Call. The Democrats of Catawba en ter upon the last week of the Campaign with cheering pros spec ts of victory. The Republicans have no hope of electing more than one or two men on their ticket, and if the Democrats will be true to the cause and turn out promptly on election day, every Democratic candidate will be successful by a substantial majoirty. Nothing short of carelessnees on the part of the Democrats them selves can prevent from winning in a most decided way. Let them come out and do their duty and the result is certain. •% The Flower Show. The chrysanthemum show was held yesterday in the Killian building. The flowers were su perb. A gorgeous cluster of deep red and old gold "Storm Kings" cultivated by Mrs. Carroll Shu ford were particularly noticeable. Mrs. J. M. Shuford's finest flow ers were the snowy "Queens" and "Colonel Appleton's," though the deep cream blooms were beautiful, too. - There was a fine display of fancy work, a center-piece worked 'by Mrs. Dolph Abernethy being one of the most tasteful articles. The candy and other refreshments yk. £old well . That Punch. We understand that the in credible assertion has been made by certain persons utterly ignor ant of what they were talking about that the punch served a' the reception given to Governo> Glenn on the night he spoke hert reduced iome of the partaker? .hereof to such a state that r might as well have been ryi whiskey of the strongest make, [f so then they must have beei the weakest brained and tht limpest muscled individuals wh ever struck Hickory. The write) is and has been ior the best part of a life time such a teetotale is to even prefer death to tak ing any intoxicating liquor, ye so far as any intoxicating effects were concerned we would hav» cheerfully agreed to drink th«. whole bowl full of the frur punch that was served. The fact is whoever wrot> that piece was so little accus tomed to decent society that he didn't even know that ii is not the custom in Hickory to serve even the mildest wine at i general gathering, and rightl> so, the sentiment among thcst deservedly called "our be3t" people being so emphaticall against it. What is known a* "fruit punch" and is seved at most-society gatherings of today in the South, where the temper ance sentiment is so strong, k simply a sort of fruit lemonade, generally made of a mixture of several kinds of fruit, but with one predominating. Before that person writes much more, ii would be as well that he learn a few things he don't know, 01 he'll make folks laugh uninten tionally. The kind of punch Gov. Glenn had in his speech here did not set well with, the Republicans. ONE PRESENT. The Democratic party is the only party in Uorth Carolina wnicn nas ever given you goca government, a government which is administered for the betterment of the whole people. The people who are in control of the Republican party in North Carolina are absolutely incapa ble of giving you good govern ment. This has been proven so disostrously that it is amazing that there is anybody who should ever want to see them in power again. NOTICE. STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF STATE. On afternoon the grand jury Jetuinei into court at* a true Mil the bill of indict ment sent against them charging that the freight depot on its present site is a nuisance. This strikes at the very heart of the matter and if there is a convic tion which seem s in every way orobable, it will no longer be a question of providing adequate facilities but the railroad will simply be compelled to tear down the depot that they have there and build a new one else where. The case will come up for trial at February term of court The railroad seems de termined to pay no attention to tie decision made hitherto and after a consultation betwee Mayor Elliott, the Alderman an \ City Attorney Hufham, the mat ter was turned over to the crimi nal side of the docket.
