GIVE NATURE A CHANCE. a strongest minds have gotten their i Miration direct from Nature. Nature L°?i£ W teacher of mankind. We «*n look to Nature for all our needs. In fhl recent Russo-Japanese war the snr- M of the Japanese navy and army iwT.vcrcd that wounds would heal more «nidlv and with better success if left to witure They washed the wounds with «-!ter which "had been boiled and thus sterilized then bandaged the wonnds with clean linen-no powerful draft or Miotics were used in their first aid to ?h injured Such methods resulted in Z fi* Of only 33 out of 682 men treated in V naval hospital for their wounds. It Is only from lack of observing Nature's that most of us suffer at one time '* -nother from indigestion, impure iLv? and a generally run-down system. Onrremedy lies in Nature's laboratory— doen in the fragrant woods-where are °,L American plants, the roots of Sa when properly treated will sup ply a health-giving tonic. Manv rears ago a physician whohad extensive practice among the afflicted made a striking departure from the usual Methods of his confreres in medicine— he «Pnt straight to Nature for the cure of those 'stomach disorders which resulted cn often in an anaemic condition, or im blood. kss of appetite, pale or alv skin, feeling of lassitude and ness He found that the bark of the Black Cherry-tree, the root of the Mandrake, Stone root. Queen's root, Bloodroot and Golden Seal root, made into a scientific, non-alcoholic extract by the use of glycerine, made the best altera tive and tonic. The refreshing influence 3 f t j,|« extract is at once apparent in the recovered strength of the patient—the vital tires of the body burn brighter and their increased activity consumes the tissue rubbish which otherwise ma.' poison the system. This alterative ana tonic extract has been found to stand alone as a safe, invigorating tonic, as it does not depend on alcohol for a false stimulation, but is Nature's turn method of strengthening and cleansing the sys tem It tones up the stomach and the blood in Nature's own way. It is well known all over the world as Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. The name given to this vegetable comp9und because one of the important ingredients wa Golden Seal root. * * * Such an authority as Dr. Roberts Bartholow, of Jefferson Medical College, says "very use* ful as a stomachic tonic. Cures catarrh of the stomach and headaches accom panying the same." Dr. Grover Coe, in his book Organic Medicines, speaking of Golden Seal root, says that "as a liver invlgorator it has few eqwils." Further he savs, "in chronic inflammation of the bladder we deem it one of the most reli able agents of cure. As a tonic in the convalescing stages of fevers, pneumonia, dvsenterv and other acute diseases Hy drastis (Golden Seal root) is peculiarly appropriate." Dr. Coe continues: "We would here add that our experience has demon strated the Hydrastis or Golden Seal root to be a valuable remedy in bronchitis, laryngitis, and other affections of the respiratory organs." "Of service in chronic catarrh of the stomach aud bowels following abuse of alcohol, a tonic after malarial fever. Has a distinct, anti-malarial influence. Good in all catarrhal conditions, as uterine catarrh, leucorrhcea, etc. Is a curative agent in chronic dyspepsia." Hobart A. Hare, M. D., University of Pennsylvania. Prof. John M. Scudder in Specific Med ication sars: "It stimulates the diges tivc processes, and increases the assimlla tion of food. By these means the blooo if enriched, and this blood feeds the muscular system. I mention the mus cular system because I b?licve it first feels the increased power imparted by the stimulation of increased nutrition. The consentient improvement on the nervous giai.aular systems are natural resuils. In r.'U tion to its general effects on the system, there is no medicine in ust about which there is such generttl unan imity of opinion. It is universally re garded as the tonic nsefnl in all de bilitated states." After many years of study and labo ratory work I)r. fi. V. Pierce produced the most happy combination of thto Golden Seal root with other efficaciouf roots—enhancing and increasing In cura tive power those native plants from our American forests by the addition of chem ically pure glycerin*, of proper strength, which is far bct*»r than alcohol, both for retracting aiv preserving the medl clnsi principles rosiaV- in plants. Gly* erine itself is nsefv*" " medicine to sub due inflammation % d by cleansing the membrane of the scomach of abnormal secretions aids in the cure of dyspepsia, and stomach and intestinal troubles. Well,-I suppose that the many readers of the good Democrat are very anxious to know how uncle Rusticus fared through the campaign and the election day. He passed through it all right and is now housed up rejoicing over the triumphant success of the good 4 old reliable Democracy that is always true tx#her princi ples and never wavery. This was a clean up in all Catawba county and will do to lay to heart. We suppose the reason we were so successful is that Mr. Click's ma chine, was over charged with Re publican electricity and explod ed. The Simmons machine did the work completely because it is made of good and substantial metal and has stronglDemocratic bolts to hold it securely; and he did a double charge of Democrat ic electricity on the 6th of No vember and made it whiz so that the Democratic electric sparks flew in every direction, killing Republican votes. It ran so fast that it made a great deal of wind and at last gather ed into a cyclone and blew at the rate of 60 miles per hour, and made an entire wreck cf the Re publican party in the Old North State. I, for my life, cannot see why i man votes the Republican tick et when the whole South is under Democratic rule. And by this acting, what can he expect. His vote is cast away. Why, they cannot get anything, inly what they get from the President. I suppose they think that their votes help to elect Roosevelt . Not a bit of it Re publicans. Your votes were not a copper in that direction. Why, don't you know that the Souch is solid Democratic, and is ruled and governed by the Democrats? Don't you know that it is a solid South, and nearly a solid North? The North always elects the President, and hence, you are no better off than we Democrats, [t is to the general interest to them, if they would vote the Democratic ticket It seems that the Republicans town here are rather down in the mouth since they have been *o badly defeated. There is nothing new in this :orner of the world just now. The farmers are pretty well hrousrh with their farm work. Mrs. F. K. Beck is verv ill just now. She has been an in yalid for about fifteen years. lam glad to know that the Democrats did good work dur ing the campaign. RUSTICUS. Office Hints. Never send articles for publi cation without giving thy name, ror thy name often secures pub lication of a worthless article. Thou shouldst not rap at the Joor of a printing office, for he that heareth thee rap ajaeereth in his sleeves and loseth time. Thou shouldst never read the copy on the printer's case or sharp and hooked container thereof, or he may knock you down. Never inquire of the editor the news, for behold it is his busi ness to give it to the thee at the appointed time without asking for it. •' It is not right that thou should ask him who is the author of an article, for it is his duty to keep such things to himself. When thou dpst enter his of fice, take heed of thyself that thou dost not look at what may concern thee not, for that is not meet in the sight of good breed ing. Neither examine thou the proof sheet for it is not ready to meet thine eye, that thou may est understand. Prefer thine own town paper, THE DEMOCRAT, to any other, and if thou hast not already done so, subscribe for it immediately. Pay for it in advance, and it , mil be well with thee and thine. Link-Ry. Miss Connie Link, of Granite Falls, and Mr. Jule Fry, of this place, were married Sun lay af ternoon. Musical Recital. These recitals will be given from time to time during the session; and lovers of good music are invited to attend, as well as all interested in the col lege. Miss Walling is a scien tific instructor, and it is instruc tive to see the progress made un der her. That Husband of Yours. Don't complain of your hus band to anyone, not even to your own mother. If she is the wise woman you think her she will re spect you all the more. Did you think when you married your Harry that he was the one per fect man in all the world, and now you have found out that he is very human, after all? That it does seem some times as though he loved himself a little better than you? That he can even bear to differ with you some times in matters that concern you verv much? And, oh, dear little woman, fiat he will forget just what you want him to re member some times? Now just take our advice and don't tell anybody. He is your husband— your other self—and you ough to cover his faults just like you do your own.— Exchange. Women as City Housekeepers. A. contributor to a recent num ber of the "Woman's Journal" makes the following comments on the city cleaning movement as conducted in a number of western towns by organizations affiliated with the American Civic Association. "One reason why the West has taken the lead in this line may be because it srives women a freer hand and more voice in pub lic affairs than the East. In Denver, women have had the full ballot for thirteen years, and have used it energetically in be half of cleaning the streets and beautifying the city. In Kala mazoo, the cleaning up of the city is notoriously due to the women, led by R?v. Caroline Bartlett Crane. In New Orleans, since the last Constitutional Con vention, women taxpayers have had a vote at tax elections, and it was the Women's Sewerage and Drainage League, \ e iJed by Miss Kate Gordon, that carried the day for the special tax to give New Orleans improved sew erage and drainage, and a pure water supply. "Chicago has put a woman, Mrs. Paul, at the head of the street-cleaning work in the most important business district ot the city, with excellent results. No .wonder that Jane Addams ?.nd almost all the women of the Chicago settlements are petition ing for a clause in the new city charter to give women the muni cipal vote! Miss Addams says: " 'A city is in many respects a great business corporation, but in other respects it is enlargsd housekeeping!' "May we not say that city housekeeping has failed partly because women, the traditional housekeepers, have not been con j suited as to its multiform activi ties?"
