DowC wilt be the speaker of the next Morth Carolina House of Repre sentatives. No better choice could be made. The President's Message. How far ihe country has gone from old - * standards of govern ment appears from a glance al Roosevelt's message. Ten years ago, when Bryar advocated an income tax, th( Republican newspapers and speakers professed to be horrifi ed. "Treason! Socialism! Anarchy!" they cried. It is an attack or the Supreme * Court." Since then, many of the Solomon fi nancial magnates who talked so impressively about the national honor" and the "tax*On thrift" have been exposed as common thieves. Some have been in dicted, v some compelled to dis gorge a large part of their ill gotten gains, while«Athers, cast out of their high positions of trust have retired in disgrace to foreign shores.- Cqmes Mr. Roosevelt now and recommend; an inheritance tax in order to curb the vast private fortunes which i site / ';now recognized • a danger to fre'e government, Mr. Roosevelt in matter, as in the other genuine reforms rec ommended by him, follows the lead of Bryan and the Demo cratic party. What was anarchy when advocated by Bryan in 1896. has become sound Repub lican doctrine in 1906. But the President suggests a dangerous departure from the land-marks of pur fathers when he suggests that on appeal in criminal cases " no new trial shall be granted for the admission or exclusion of in competent testimony for errone ous instructions by the judge be low or for any mistake in plead ing or the bill Jf indictment,'un less judge of the higher court is satisfied that there has been a f miscarriage of justice. This • would be placing an enormoi s i power in the hands of oppellate * judges and would amount to set ting aside some of the very fund amental principles of the consti tution and the Bill of Rights. In the Japanese controversy he sides with the foreigners and urges in favor of „the right to compel California to. admit Japa ness children into the white pub lic schools. This would also prove a startling invasion of State rights. Here the Pacific States will find the South stand ing firmly by them; for, as has been snggested, if the general government can force the public schools of California to admit Japanese,' it cbuld' also force North Carolina to admit Liberian and Jamaica negroes into-the white schools of this State, Stock-Holders Meeting. The annual stock-holders meet ing of the First National _ Bank, of Hickory, N. C., will be held .at their office Tuesday, Jan. Bth, 1907, at 9 o'clock. : K. C. MENZIES, Cashier. A Mecklenburg farmer warns farmers to be careful about feed ing damaged corn and other damaged feed to horses. He says the damaged feed causes "blind staggers" among the stock and is killing many of them. If you want to see something * beautiful, just step in and ask I Seo. E.
