Rice onlysQc» Ciiristmas Services. In the church of the Ascension have bee.i frequent and greatly enjoyed. Very pr">fu«e «!ecora tions set olf tiie little rch in a most festal manner. The Rec tor preache J at Lenoir Christmas morning to a large congregation and again at Hickory in the even ing on Wednesday evening after a bright carol service in the church, the members of the* Sun day-school adjourned to the school house where a gorgeous Christmas tree awaited the smil ing children. Again onr Friday at 10:30 the Feast of the Holy Imacents the Rector preached and celebrated the Holy Com munion, the attendance being most encouraging. On Jan. Ist the Feast of the Circumcism commerating our Lord's admis sion into the Jewish church tnere was an address on the; manv lessons of the Day and the Holy communion. The Rector, Rev. J. S. Moody and. his family were most gener-' ously remembered by the congre- j gation on handsome gift of! money—and by individual mem bers —both here and in Lenoir and in Happy Valley with prac-! tical tokens of esteem and good ' will. The parish of the Episcopal j church as well as the town are greatly distressed at the removal of Mr. Eric Ericsson and his bright family to Little Rock, Ark. May good fortune go with them. * v A Tribute to the late W.' H. I Ellis, As one wh) know the late W. H. Ellis, in the days of his prime, I wish to speak a ftw words in nind remembrance. At one time, there was probably no man in the business world of Hickory better known than Wil liam Ellis. He was what is known as a "safe" man—that is one in whose business ven tures, other men, not so skilled j n the same lines, could safely take a share. He never specu lated. He was certain that the matter was legitimate and con servatively sure before he made a move; but, once certain, he en tered into all he undertook with | energy and boldness. He had a kind heart, felt for all in trouble or distress, ol what ever sort. He was not over ready to make friendships, but, when he loved a friend he never forgot nor forsook him.His loyal ty was of a sort uncommon in these latter days of commercial ism and purchased civilities. Of his courage in the dark days that still live in some faith ful hearts, it is enough to say, that, though he would joke as to how "terribly' scared" he was on certain occasions (and well he might have been) he probably never knew what real fear meant. Physically powerful, he had, besides, a certain sturdy de termination tfcat became a mag nificent attribute in face of dan ger. Mr. Ellis married a daughter jf the late "Andy Shuford," one of the best men Hickory ever claimed as our own. With her he spent a long and most happy ' married life, and, through his long, wearying illness, he was nursed and tended by her with the truest devotion. Two daugh ters, Mrs. Mott and Mrs. Simp Simpson, blessed their union, and his love for his girls was some thing almost pathetic—so tender and deep it was. No woman could have felt or showed g*eat er tenderness than he manifest ed for them. In the breaking up of their old home, the reverance of ties that have meant so much, there is fresh heart-break for the wife and daughters, and those who have known and loved them so long feel for them the warmest sympathy. Rev. J. C. Moser's congrega tion gaye him a. very substantial | p ending Tuesday night. NOTICE OF LAND SALE.
