This November 30th, 1906. 4 M. H. YOUNT, Commissioner. J " » Moretz big Dece nber sale is now on. Conover News. The Christmas season was rea sonably quiet at Conover. About half the people of our place like a religiously quiet time ail the year, while the other half like a little noise for variety. Some boys for a day or so used a small number of explosions to the an noyance of the fearful. Some, who tljink much of Christmas as a time to mark with joy the com ing of Jesus to save the lost, think there should be no shoot ing. Sounds of war, they say, can not accord With the procla mation of "Peace on earth, good will to men." Any who drank to exacerliation kept it rather quiet. Dancing never did much good at Conover. But our young folks will greatly enjoy a social even ing together. Wednesday even ing a good company of their spent a pleasant evening at Mr. Jonas Hunsucker's. The event was in honor of Miss Stella Wag ner, niece of Mrs. Hunsucker. Mrs. Crawford McCall, of Knoxville, daughter of Mr. Hun sucker. has been for a season with her mother at the old home. Mrs. Bertha Shoaf, of Salis bury, is also with her mother a few days, Capt P. F. Smith's. Our local Lutheran conference Dec. 27 and 28 was attended by Rev. A. L. Crouse, of Hickory, and E. T. Coyner, of Asheville. But our pastor, Rev. P. Bischoff turned his back to the confer ence, and went to Virginia for a good time. ' Some think he is on the business of seeking a part ner of his tears and joys. His brother, Albert, who is testing transformers for electric lights in Massachusetts, spent the holi days with hjs parents here. Prof. Haester, of Columbus, Ohio, has been called to fill the vacancy in the faculty of Concor dia college, this place. He is said to be a good man. We hope he will accept. Mr. W. E. Hallman who was born at Conover, has been sell ing goods here for about eigh teen months. He is now offer ins his small farm for sale, sell ing his goods at auction, and will return to South Carolina. Concordia College, and our other schools, will reopen January ?nd. . Several families from Wiscon sin whQjive here prefer preach ing in Crerman. They have been used to that from infancy, so they have an occasional service in that language in Concordia church. Mr. William Wagner, lately of Wisconsin, is building a good dwelling on his farm, two miles from Conoyer. Most of us-favor a state refor matory and industrial school for each race. We think it is need edf and if rightly managed will save money and increase produc tion of wealth in the State. LEGAL NOTICE.
