Ramson are doing the preaching. Mrs. J. F. Norris has gone to Trinity, N. C., to be at the bed side of her sick mother. Mrs. Norris was called by telegram Sunday. Misses Lovie Sigmon, Lucile Shuford and Josephine Murphy are visiting Miss Eliza Calvin, of Asheville, who is giving a ten days' house party. Miss Georgia Sigmon, daugh ter of Mrs. A. Y. Sigmon, is at home on vacation after having spent her first term at Powhatan College, Charlestown, W. Va. Bob Helton, the man who shot his wife while on a spree during Christmas, was tried before the Superior c(»urt last Friday and was given thirty days on the road. The many friends of Miss Pau line Gwaltney will be delighted to hear that she is recuperating very fast from a case of typhoid fever and will soon be able to be up. The prettiest animal in the way of a horse that ever struck Catawba county can now be sees here at J. H. Aiken's stable. The Newton fanciers should come up and see a good iooking horse. Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Freeze have returned from their bridal tour to New York City, Niagara, Canada, the Great Lakes and Thousand Islands. Mr. Freeze is one of Newton's enterprising young druggists and the Demo crat wishes to, extend congratu lations to the young couple. Lenoir College has added sev eral new teachers, to their facul ty. The feature of the game was the pitching of Colee, who allotted only one hit. , v Man Hurt, Horse and Cow Killed by Lightning. One day last week Mr. Lee Bowman, of Wittenbury town ship, was plowing in a field when he waf struck by lightning and badly hurt from which he is now just recovering. The horse Mr. Bowman was plowing was killed, also a cow was killed nearby. This news was brought to us by Mr. D. M. Wittenburg, who lives nearby. Committee for Reunion to . Meet. The committee on arrange ments for the Old Soldiers' Re union of the various townships are requested to meet at the court house at Newton July 27th at 1 o'clock p. m., to transact some important business in re gard to the annual meeting to be held at Newton Aug. 15th. Munroe Townsend made a busi ness trip to Elk Park yesterday. Miss Jennie Townsend visited in Caldwell last week. Mr. A. M. Dougherty, of Bak ers Gap. Tenn., is in this section looking after mineral. There is right much excitement in this part of the country at present, owing to the fact that there is fifteen cases of small pox in Cranberry. Both Elk Park and Cranberry are under quarantine. Mrs. Agnes Grider who has been'visiting her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Harmon, of Bjuff City, Tenn., has returned to her home at Reese, N. C. Mr. Gilbert Smith, of Brook lyn, N. Y., is visiting his sister, Mrs. C. D. Taylor, of this place. ft. A. M. Miss Marion Ross, mother and aunt, of Bascomville, S. C., on their way to Catawba Springs for the summer, spent several hours in the city Tuesday. Notice.
