Bagby and Misses Ivah and Fannie Bagby have re turned from a six weeks stay in the mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Moretz spent a week at Mr. J. S. Leon ard's while Mrs. Leonard was on a visit to the country. Mr. James Riddle is spending a few weeks in Virginia. We can't say that he is there on bus iness in the commercial line. * Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Riddle were off to Jamestown this week. They expect to visit other noted places before returning home. Mrs. W. E. Whitener Saturday, has been greatly enjoyed. Some of them weighed over a pound and of a fine variety. Mr. Whitener knows how to please the editor. A number of Hickory gentle men were out on a fox hunt last Monday night. There wente more than twenty-five dogs in the race and the music they made beats that of any band we-have heard. After carrying so many dogs the hunt was unsuccessful. Dr. and Mrs. Deadrick, of Knoxville, Tenn., are expected to return to the city and spend a few days with their friend, Mrs. Jas. Beard, before return ing to their home. The Dr. and wife made many warm friends during their short stay in the city. % "- i Company A. has returned fr*m the encampment at Morehead and Jamestown. The Hickory company was the only one that was cheered when it passed the reviewers stand. The regiment al officers unhesitating say it is the besii drilled company in the State, The firemen have..returned from the tournament at Wilming : ton. Mr. J. A. Martin has bought a controlling interest in the New ton cotton mills. The trade was consummated this week and the new management will begin Sept. Ist. The congregation at the Pres byterian church last Sunday en joyed some good singing by Mr. Samuel Knox Phillips, of Rich mond, Va. He sang beautiful solos at both services, morning and evening. In the contest for the champ-j ionship of the Carolinas the Lin colnton team won. Sumptei was the pennant winner in the South Carolina Baseball League and Lincolnton has beaten every thing that played her in this State. Five games were plaved iu the championship series, two at Lincolnton and three at Char lotte. Lincolnton won three of th five. .. .
