Clinard, of the Southern Railway, spent Sunday in the city with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Clinard. Mr. Tom Hall and two children of Mooresville, spent a few hours between trains in the city with his father, Mr. P. C. Hall. Mr. Frank Henderson has re turned from a pleasure trip to Gastonia pnd Dallas. He says that these towns are in a thriving con dition. The many friends of Mr. Ken neth Little are glad to see him again in the city. Mr. Little has made good as a traveling drug salesman Mr. George Lyeriy leaves to day for the Exposition. He will go to Agricultural and Mechanical col lege from there. Mr. Lyeriy gets his diploma in electrical engineer ing next spring. Mr. Rufus Bowles, his son, and 1 nephew of Kansas are visiting his brother, Mr. J. A. Bowles. Their many friend are glad to learthat they are doing so well in their adopted state . j Mr. C. L. Hawn has moved his stock of goods from Park Row to his own store on Morganton St. A large addition of cement blocks has been made to the rear of the store. The Campbell Bottling Works,that formely occupied Mr. Hawn's store, will carry on their business in the new addition A Hickory team composed of home boys defeated Newton in a game of baseball here last week A large number of fans missed seeing the best game of the sea son. There were not more than a score that witnissed the game. The score was five to two in fav or of Hickory. * Dr. J. C. Rowe, former presisid ing elder of the Statesville dis trict of the M. E. Church South, now pastor at Concord, N; C.» passed through Hickory last Fri day morning on his way home from Asheville, where he had been visiting his son Rev. Mr. Louis Couch of Salisbury was in the City this week visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. K ; llian spent Sunday with her father near Lineolnten. Mr. Hazel Aiken leaves the se cond of Sept. for Raleigh, N. C., where he enters A. and M. Col lege. Miss Josephene Murphy returns to day from Lincolnton. She vist* ed Miss Lena Rheinhardt for ten days or more. The band gave an open air con cert Saturday night A large crowd enjoved the excellent music. Mr. Hal Cooper has returned from an extended trip to James town, Baltimore, Washington, and New York. The skating rink has reopened for the fall season under the man agement of Mr. Flowers. A'large number are present each night. Miss Ivah Bagby leaves to day for Cornelius to visit her sister, Mrs. W. H. Willis. From there she goes to her work in the Grees boro Graded Shools. A singing class composed of children of Oxford Orphanage ga ve a concert here Friday night ed and the audience was well plea ed with the entertainment. Forty seven tickets from Hick ory to Jamestown were sold here Tuesday. The Hickory people be leive in taking advantage of the low l&tes to the Exposition. The performances of the James Adames Co are first class in every respect. Many were heard to say that had paid fifty cents for show that were not as good. Mr. W. M. Bagby, Jr., who has been working in Salisbury for V. Wallace and Sons during mer months, returns to Hickory the first of September and enters Lenoir College. Chief Jones is making it rather warm for hoboes. About six were given lodging at different times last week at the "Hickory Inn" They found that it was no trou ble to gttin, but that it took a do nation to the city's treasurea to get out, Mr. John C. Hopper and fami ly, of Salisbury, have been visit ing at the home of Mr. W. L. Craig on Morganton street. Miss Addie Craig accompanied them home and is now spending a few weeks there qisiting friends. Miss Ada Ingram spent sever al days with the Misses Morton, of East Hickory, last week, and left Saturday evening for the Exposition and Baltimore. She was accomponied by Miss Lula Morton who has been spending her vacation with parents here. Five Brookford boys were tri ed beforeJ&r. C. L. Whitenerfor trying to drown a negroe boy in a creek. The affair came very near being a fatal one as it was only with great difficulty that the negroe escaped. Two of the white boys were released for like ot* evidence, the other ones were bound.over. He left his home in Virginia Tuesday of last week. Mr. Jas. A. Martin and family returned from Jamestown Mon day. Mr. Martin says the Expo si cion is a fine show. H. Umstead. Mrs. Dora Palmer leaves to day for Gastonia where she has accepted a position with the Bell Telephone as stenographer and bookkeeper. Dr. L. H. Broughton, the great evangelist of Atlanta, Ga., was here Thursday and went to Le noir where he delivered a lec ture. Dr. Gwaltney accompan ied him to Lenoir. The faculty has been en larged and strengthened; a most substantial brick dormitory for young men has been added. Special ad antages are offered in music, art, expression and business.
