THE sweet and pious crowd of washing machme men are the greatest rascals that have been in Catawba county in a number of years. They are gone; thanks to the talented, and unpecunary services of Self and Whitener. There are only two classes of people who purchase the right to sell rights—to sell rights a* many times as you nleaso. Thev are those who need a guardian, and those who are rascallv in clined. The first class could havr the contracts declared void on the ground that they are idiot? and therefore not cable of mak ing a contract. The latter clasp have no hope and are in the same class of Crooker and Armsby— possibly with the exception of shrewdness. The two following ordinance? have not been enforced as they might have been: "It shall be unlawful for anv person or persons to loiter around the passenger depot out. of idle curiosity, and any person whr> shall after request from the po lice officer, refuse to depart therefrom, shall on conviction,b* fined five dollars.'* The second one is: "No dra~ or other waeron belonging 1 to a merchant of the city of Hickory shall be allowed to stand on North Park Place. Any person or persons violating this ordi nance shall pay a hue of five dol lars." We realize that the duties of the city officials are varied and numerous, also that it is impos sible to see everpthing that hap pens. Yet we think it is impos sible to, and that the above ordi nances should be enforced. It is no pleasure to force your way through a crowd 'of ordorous ne groes before you can board a train. Not only negroes but a large number of a certain class of white people have a habit o/' congregoting at the depot on the arrival of trains. The depot should be made a costly loafing place. One evening last week we counted seven wagons and bug gies on that portion of Main street between Shuford's Hard ware store and R. W. Steveson's place of business. Not one of these teams hitched or a driver near. At the same time there were seven moving buggies and carriages on Park Row. Scores of children were on the streets and many ladies were shopping. What would have been the result, if one of those unhitched teams had become frightened and ran at break-neck speed down the crowded street? Other teams possibly would have gone on the "war path;" the lives of your children and wives would been in great danger, you may have been so fortunate however in having your mother-in-law plac ed where she could do you no more harm. If these ordinances are enforced the conveniences of the traveling public will be great ly increased and the danger from run-away teams greatly lessened. C Col. W. H. Williams, of New ton, was a Hickory visitor Mon day. Mr. Clyde Rowe, of Newton, spent Monday in the city with friends. Miss Delia Kirkman,of Marion, is visiting Misses Ola and Delia Bumgarner. The Crooked Crooker Skips. Messrs. Crooker and Armsby, Who were held, each under a ihree hundred dollar bond, to ap pear .Friday before justice of the peace Leonard to answer the charge of conspiracy have left for parts unknown. Friday the court came to order at 2p. m., and the defendants called but failed to answer. The bonds were declared forfeited and were forwarded to the clerk of Supe rior court. at Newton. Crooker was also under a three hundred dollar bond to appear at the next Superior court of Catawba coun ty for obtaining money from Will Kennedy by false pretense. A> it is not likely -that he will ap pear, the amounted in bonds for feited will be nine hundred dol lars. Things were getting a little too warm for these wasting ma chine crooks. Mr. Robt. Aber nethy had returned a one hun dred and twenty-five dollar note he held to Mr. Will Kennedy and turned state's evidence. He would have exposed the entire craud and the defendants escap ed none to soon to save their hides. It is rumored that one Clark, who testified for the defendant in the case of the State vs Crook er and for whom a warrant was to be ssued for perjury, has al so left the city; counting the cross ties between Hickory anc Hudson. A board bill, in pay ment of which he gave some time ago his personal note, waj left unsettled, as the note wai valueless. It appears that the washing machine men did no' make much out of Catawba coun ty after all. J Something Worth Looking - After. Messrs. Campbell, Buchanan & Co., will have an auction sale of some valuable lots at Grand View on the sth of October. Terms of sale $lO.OO cash and $5.00 per month. These people have spent a great deal of money building a 40 feet street from town over to Grand View, which when completed, will be one of the nicest driveways in Hickory. You will find some of the nicest building lots in Grand View that can be found anywhere in West ern North Carolina and quite a number af people have been out there making selections. This sale has created more sensation than any sale that has ever been agitated by Messrs. Campbell, Buchannon & Co. There is not a company anywherej that would have spent the money that these men are spending to improve the property of ther people. These gentlemen deserve a good deal of credit for what they are doing for that part of the City and we know from the talk that hae been about this sale that it is go ing to be one of the best patron ized sales ever had in Hickory. They are going to give away $5( in gold and it will be divided up so that a number of people wili get a portion of it. There wil be two $lO gold pieces, four $6 gold pieces and four $2.50 golo pieces given away. There will also be three lots given away. In order to get a chance at the gold and free lots they will give tickets and parties holding tick ets must be on the ground at the date of sale. You can get a ticket by calling on Messrs. Campbell or Buchanan, or C. T. Morrison. Everybody that will be on the ground at date of sale (either lady or gentlemen) can secure a ticket bv calling on Mr. Campbell, Buchanan or C. T. Morrison. Dr. G. E. Flowers and wife, of Granite Falls, were Democrat callers Tuesday. They were on their way to Jamestrwn. Monday night a negro cabin in East Hickory owned by- the late Sid Morrison was destroyed by fire. The alarm was turned in a* bout 10 p. m.,and the fire depart ment reached the scene with their usual quickness. Two Negro Boys in Trouble. Tuesday night Policeman Yo der caught Frank Jones and Er nest §mith robbing Mr. Willis' restaurant. They had made four raids during the last week, se curing $5.85 in cash Friday night. They made their entrance by the back window and prized open the partition door with the stove pokei. They were tried Wednesday morning before the mayor and bound over to the su perior court. In default of $2OO each, they were sent to jail. There are a large num ber of husky students who with proper training will make good foot ball men. Games will be arranged with Catawba College and possibly Guilford and Oak Ridge. Hickory Again Victorious. Hickory again defeated Lenoir College Monday afternoon in a game of base ball. Lenoir took the lead in the first inning, scor ing two men. Hickory was un able to send a man across the home plate until the sixth in ning, when the Hickory boys found Mouser for four hits which with costly errors netted four runs. . The features of the game were the stick work of Bost and Bum garner for Hickory, and a long drive by Miller for the college lads. The batteries were: Hick ory, Suttlemyre and Bumgarner; Lenoir College, Mouser and Cromer. Hickory cotton market eleven cents. lhere will be preaching in the Reformed church next Sunday morning and night. Miss Adlaide Boyd has return ed to her work as a teacher in Claremont College."
